Mrs. San Miguel - Principal
Hello, Calhoun!
I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the start of spring. As we wrap up the second week of STAAR testing, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for your continued support and encouragement during this important time. Your partnership makes all the difference!
Next week, we continue with the 8th Grade Social Studies STAAR test on Tuesday, April 22nd. Also, a friendly reminder that Monday, April 21st is a Bad Weather Makeup Day, which means school will be in session.
This month, we’re highlighting the IB Learner Profile: Knowledgeable—a perfect fit for testing season! Our students are demonstrating their ability to explore concepts, ideas, and issues deeply and thoughtfully. Whether they’re analyzing historical events or interpreting texts, we are so proud of the knowledge they’re bringing to each test.
As we move through the final weeks of the school year, I do want to ask for your support in helping us maintain a safe and focused learning environment. We’ve noticed an increase in horseplay and students not consistently following the Calhoun 4 Ps: Prompt, Prepared, Professional, and Polite. Please take a moment to talk with your student about what it means to uphold these expectations, both in and out of the classroom.
Thank you for being an essential part of the Calhoun family.
Together, we’ll finish strong!

At Calhoun Middle School, our mission is to cultivate a healthy school culture where we continuously collaborate and embrace necessary change to ensure student learning in an ever-evolving global community.
We are thrilled to share that Calhoun Middle School was proudly represented at the Denton ISD Teacher and Paraprofessional of the Year celebration this week!
Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Betty Burney, our Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Burney is a 6th-grade ELAR teacher who brings passion, creativity, and care to her classroom every day. Her dedication to student growth and love for literature inspire both her students and colleagues.
We also celebrate Christine Borel, our Paraprofessional of the Year. As a Deaf Education interpreter, Mrs. Borel plays a vital role in supporting our students and ensuring inclusive, accessible learning. Her patience, professionalism, and heart make a tremendous difference on our campus.
We are so grateful for these two outstanding educators and the positive impact they have on our Calhoun community. Congratulations, Mrs. Burney and Mrs. Borel—you make us proud!
We’re thrilled to share that the Calhoun Middle School Spring Art Show Opening Reception was a beautiful success! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at Embassy Suites Denton to celebrate the creativity and talent of our incredible student artists.

April
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. This month’s Learner Profile is Knowledgeable!
Each of the attributes in the IB Learner Profile includes a "We" statement that describes how to embody the learner profile and highlights its importance. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student, and encourage them to embrace being knowledgeable.
At Calhoun MS, we develop and use our understanding across a wide range of subjects, exploring ideas that are meaningful and important. We seek to learn about the world around us, making connections between what we study and real-life situations.
Being knowledgeable means asking questions, thinking critically, and sharing what we learn with others. Let’s strive to be knowledgeable by staying curious, open-minded, and eager to grow every day!

Our 6th grade IB Design students put their problem-solving and collaboration skills to the test during the Toxic Popcorn Design Challenge! Tasked with safely transferring "toxic" popcorn (pennies) from one container to another without entering the contamination zone, students applied the engineering design process to brainstorm, build, and refine their solutions. It was a fun, hands-on way to explore teamwork, creativity, and real-world thinking—all core elements of the IB Design cycle!
Thank you to 6th grade Math teacher Andrew Lopez de Nava for creating an informative video that reviews key components of the Home Access Center (HAC). HAC is where parents and guardians can view grades and attendance records.
Please take a moment to watch this video, available in both English and Spanish, to learn how to navigate HAC and stay informed to support your learner.
