Hello, Calhoun Community!
It’s hard to believe it’s already May, and we’re down to the final three weeks of the school year!
First and foremost, I want to share just how proud I am of our Colts. We’ve officially wrapped up our final round of STAAR testing, and the effort from both students and staff was truly inspiring. As we head into Teacher Appreciation Week next week, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude for the dedication of our teachers and staff. They’ve gone above and beyond to prepare our students academically, emotionally, and in every way that counts. It truly takes a village, and ours is one of the very best.
As we round the corner to the finish line, we’re shifting into a season of celebration, reflection, and purpose. Here’s a peek at what’s coming up:
Colt Carnival – Thursday, May 15
Honor Roll & IB Community Builder Awards – Friday, May 16
8th Grade Garden Gala Formal – Friday, May 16 (Evening)
Final Exams
This year, we are introducing a Final Exam Schedule for all grade levels. Assessments may look different depending on the course; they could be a test, a performance, or a project. The goal is to keep students engaged through the end of the year while helping them build habits that will support them in high school, where semester and final exams are the norm.
As we reflect on this year, our IB Learner Profile focus is "Reflective." We are encouraging students to look back on their growth, consider what they’ve learned about academics, themselves, and others and to carry those lessons forward.
Let’s also finish strong by practicing kindness with our words, with our actions, and with ourselves. These last few weeks are full of opportunities to lift each other up, celebrate our journey, and leave a lasting positive impact on our Calhoun community.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Let’s make these last three weeks meaningful, memorable, and full of Colt pride!

At Calhoun Middle School, our mission is to cultivate a healthy school culture where we continuously collaborate and embrace necessary change to ensure student learning in an ever-evolving global community.
Calhoun Middle School 8th graders experienced a heartwarming moment of community and connection as every student received a personal copy of Invisible by Christina Diaz Gonzalez. Calhoun librarian Mrs. Hill hosted this meaningful event in our Maker Space in partnership with the Breakfast Kiwanis Club of Denton.
Four Kiwanis Club representatives joined us to distribute the books and deliver a thoughtful message about the story’s themes of friendship, identity, and service—core values that align beautifully with our IB philosophy. Invisible, a powerful graphic novel, invites students to reflect on what it means to understand and stand up for others.
We are incredibly grateful to the Breakfast Kiwanis Club and Mrs. Hill for making this special experience possible. Check out the event photos and be sure to ask your 8th grader how the book is inspiring them to make a difference!

May
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. This month’s Learner Profile is Reflective!
Each of the attributes in the IB Learner Profile includes a "We" statement that describes how to embody the learner profile and highlights its importance. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student, and encourage them to embrace being Reflective.
At Calhoun MS, we take time to think deeply about our learning, our actions, and how they impact ourselves and others. We reflect on our experiences to celebrate successes and recognize areas where we can improve.
Being reflective means setting goals, learning from challenges, and always striving to grow as students and individuals. Let’s practice being reflective by thinking about what we’ve learned, how we’ve learned it, and how we can do even better next time!
