Greetings, Calhoun Colts Families!
We are approaching the final stretch of the first 9 weeks, with the grading period ending on Friday, October 11th. This is a crucial time for our students to be proactive and advocate for themselves to finish strong! Students, I encourage you to check your grades on the Home Access Center (HAC), submit any missing assignments, and take advantage of tutoring opportunities. Let’s finish these 9 weeks in a way that makes you proud!
Next week is packed with excitement and opportunities for students to shine, starting with Spirit Week! Each day will feature a different dress-up theme to get us all in the spirit for the Colt Stampede Fun Run on Friday. Be sure to check out the schedule of dress-up days and participate as we gear up for the big event!
Here’s what’s happening throughout the week:
Tuesday, 10/8: We’ll kick off the day with a pep rally to get everyone hyped for the Colt Stampede Fun Run!
Wednesday, 10/9: Our 8th graders will be taking the PSAT during the first half of the day. Meanwhile, our 6th and 7th graders will complete a math assessment designed by their teachers to evaluate their understanding of recently taught skills.
Friday, 10/11: It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for—the Colt Stampede Fun Run! Students will charge through obstacles and stations to raise funds that support enriching field trips and campus activities. Don’t forget, it’s also an early release day, with school dismissing at 12:30 PM.
And, looking ahead, please remember that Monday, October 14th is Indigenous Peoples Day, and all Denton ISD schools will be closed in observance of the holiday.
Let’s make this last week of the 1st 9 weeks one to remember! Show your school spirit, finish strong, and have fun!
Go Colts!

At Calhoun Middle School, our mission is to cultivate a healthy school culture where we continuously collaborate and embrace necessary change to ensure student learning in an ever-evolving global community.
Our Colt Stampede Fun Run fundraiser is off to an incredible start! The donation page opened on October 2nd, and we raised an impressive $2,000 in the first 24 hours. As of today, we’ve surpassed $3,000 and we are hoping to keep the momentum going!
Our amazing PTA has been cheering us on and keeping everyone updated through Facebook posts. Don't forget to follow them! Here are some highlights:
"LET'S GO, COLTS! We're in DAY 2 of our fundraising campaign, culminating in our STAMPEDE & FUN RUN a WEEK FROM TODAY! As of this post, we’ve raised $2,707 with ONLY 4% of our students participating. Where are the other 96% of Calhoun Middle School students? Now’s the time to get the word out to your friends and family near and far!"
"Hello Calhoun Middle School Colts! Just a quick update—looks like the 6th grade squad has just nudged those 8th graders out of the lead! What are you going to do about it, 8th grade? How about some friendly competition? 7th grade—are you all okay with this?"
This is such an exciting time for our campus, and the energy is electric! Students, don’t forget to spread the word to your family and friends, and let’s see which grade level comes out on top! With just a week to go, this is your chance to help support enriching field trips and fun campus activities by participating in the Colt Stampede Fun Run!
We appreciate all of the support and can’t wait to see everyone’s enthusiasm grow as we approach Friday, October 11th, for the big event!
Let’s make this year’s Colt Stampede the best one yet!
Members of the Firebird and Eroica Orchestras will be performing with the varsity and non-varsity orchestra students from McMath as well as the students from the Denton HS Orchestra program with Mark Wood. Teachers and students get in free.
DHS will be hosting Mark Wood on October 7th and 8th. Calhoun Orchestra will join on the 8th at 7:00 p.m. If you’re interested to see what that event is like here is the link to tickets—teachers are free: https://www.vancoevents.com/us/CPED
We have some exciting opportunities lined up for our 8th graders!
Tour of LaGrone Academy – October 30
Our 8th-grade students will have the chance to tour the LaGrone Academy on October 30th. Students who are part of the cross-country team will attend the morning tour, and all students will return to campus for lunch after the tour.
UNT Field Trip – November 18
On November 18th, 8th graders will take a field trip to the University of North Texas (UNT). Students will need to bring a sack lunch or pick up one from the cafeteria before departing. UNT will provide each student with a backpack to carry their lunch. Please note that student backpacks and cell phones will remain locked at school, but teachers will be available to communicate any emergency messages between students and families.
These are great opportunities for our students to explore future educational pathways
October
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. For the month of October, we are BALANCED!
Each of the learner profiles includes a "We" statement that describes how to show the learner profile and why the learner profile is important. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student and encourage them to strive to see themselves as an IB BALANCED LEARNER.
As balanced learners, we strive to be individuals who understand the importance of nurturing our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. We commit to engaging in a variety of activities that promote personal growth, foster positive relationships, and enhance our learning experiences.
