Greetings, Calhoun Colts Families!
We’re heading into the final week before Thanksgiving Break, and there’s a lot to be proud of as we reflect on the progress our students have made this month. Let’s finish strong by focusing on academics and making sure all loose ends are tied up before the holiday!
3-Week Grade Check on Friday, November 22nd
As we approach the end of this grading period, we’re encouraging all students to focus on their academics. Now is the perfect time for students to catch up on any missing assignments or tests before the break.
November Learner Profile: Thinkers
This month, we’re celebrating the Thinker attribute of the IB Learner Profile. We encourage our Colts to use critical thinking skills to tackle challenges and solve problems creatively. As we wrap up this grading period, let’s inspire our students to be thoughtful about their responsibilities—reflecting on their learning, setting priorities, and taking ownership of their progress.
Thanksgiving Break
A well-deserved break is just around the corner! Calhoun will be closed from Monday, November 25th to Friday, November 29th. We hope everyone enjoys this time to relax, recharge, and spend time with loved ones.
Let’s keep the momentum going this week, Colts! Thank you for your continued support in helping us make Calhoun a place where our students grow, learn, and flourish.
With appreciation,
Mrs. San Miguel

This Veterans Day, Calhoun Middle School took the opportunity to honor the brave men and women who have served our country, especially those within our CMS community and the family members of our staff. To mark this important occasion, our school community participated in a variety of meaningful activities.
CMS Jr. IB Ambassadors lined the front entry of the school with American flags as a tribute to our veterans. During the morning announcements, we read aloud the names of veterans from our community, expressing our heartfelt gratitude for their service and sacrifices.
In addition to this, our 6th-grade French students in Mme Torrey's class made a special connection between Armistice Day in France and Veterans Day in the United States. The students learned about the historical significance of Armistice Day and its connection to honoring veterans. To show their appreciation, the French classes created thank-you cards that were given to local veterans, expressing gratitude for their service.
This celebration aligns with the MYP’s emphasis on global contexts and international-mindedness. By exploring the connection between Armistice Day and Veterans Day, students deepened their understanding of different perspectives on conflict and peace, fostering a sense of empathy and appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans worldwide.
We are proud of the efforts of our students and staff in coming together to honor those who have served our country and our community.

Calhoun's Fall Art Show Opening Reception was a fantastic celebration of incredible student art and community support! A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support our talented young artists! If you missed the opening, don’t worry—it’s not too late to see these amazing works. Just stop by the Embassy Suites in Denton (behind Alamo Draft House) and ask to be directed to the Calhoun Art Gallery. We’d love for you to experience the creativity of our students! A special thank you to our Art teachers, Mrs. Kernan and Mrs. Romero, for their incredible dedication in helping our students prepare for this night.
IB encourages schools to make and foster relationships within the community. This event is a great example of that! Thank you to the Greater Denton Art Council and Embassy Suites for making helping CMS make this event happen twice each year.
November
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. For the month of November, we are THINKERS!
Each of the attributes in the IB Learner Profile includes a "We" statement that describes how to embody the learner profile and highlights its importance. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student, and encourage them to embrace being an IB THINKER.
As thinkers, we strive to be individuals who approach problems thoughtfully and creatively, using critical thinking skills to make reasoned decisions. We commit to analyzing situations from multiple perspectives and reflecting on our ideas and actions to grow as engaged, open-minded learners.
