Greetings, Calhoun Families!
Happy New Year! As we begin the second semester, we are excited to continue our journey of learning and growth with your students. It’s a great time to reflect on all the progress we’ve made and look forward to the opportunities ahead.
We are thrilled to announce our upcoming awards ceremony on Thursday, 1/30, where we will honor our IB Community Builders and Honor Roll students. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our students.
For our 8th grade parents, please don’t miss 9th Grade Transition Night, where you’ll get important information about high school. The flyer included in this newsletter has all the details.
As we encourage our students to continue growing academically and personally, we also ask for your support in fostering a community of respect. While we are promoting the IB Learner Profile of Open-minded this month, we also ask students to be Caring and show kindness and empathy toward others.
A few quick reminders: The school doors open at 7:45 AM. With the colder weather, we kindly ask that students avoid arriving too early, as it’s not ideal for them to wait outside in the cold. Rest assured, if temperatures are too low, we will always make accommodations for students inside until the school day begins.
Finally, basketball season is underway, and our teams would love your support! Our next game is next Thursday against McMath Middle School, and we hope to see you there to cheer on our student-athletes.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to make this a fantastic year for our students. We look forward to all that’s ahead!
With appreciation,
Mrs. San Miguel

Thank you to 6th grade Math teacher Andrew Lopez de Nava for creating an informative video that reviews key components of the Home Access Center (HAC). HAC is where parents and guardians can view grades and attendance records.
Please take a moment to watch this video, available in both English and Spanish, to learn how to navigate HAC and stay informed to support your learner.

January
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. For the month of January, we are OPEN-MINDED!
Each of the attributes in the IB Learner Profile includes a "We" statement that describes how to embody the learner profile and highlights its importance. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student, and encourage them to embrace being an OPEN-MINDED learner
"We recognize the importance of understanding and honoring our own cultures and personal histories, while embracing the rich diversity of perspectives, values, and traditions that others bring. We actively seek to engage with different viewpoints and thoughtfully evaluate them, fostering mutual respect and learning. We are committed to personal growth through these experiences, knowing that broadening our understanding enriches both ourselves and the communities we are part of. "

When science meets language arts! Mrs. Kimberlin’s 8th-grade science students and Ms. Bosquez’s 6th-grade Language & Literature (ELAR) students came together today for an incredible cross-curricular activity! 8th graders created nonfiction posters about space, while 6th graders used them for a gallery walk to explore nonfiction text structures and gather new facts!
This collaboration is a perfect example of how the IB program encourages students to make connections between subjects and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Calhoun Middle School staff participated in an engaging professional development session led by our campus Guiding Coalition. The focus of the session was enhancing direct instruction through questioning techniques that promote deeper thinking. Teachers explored methods that encourage students to move beyond simply providing answers, guiding them to reflect on the why and how behind their responses. By using cross-curricular questioning strategies, staff gained valuable tools to foster critical thinking and deeper understanding in the classroom. Stay tuned for photos capturing these insightful moments!
