Greetings, Calhoun Families!
This week, we have so much to celebrate at Calhoun!
First, a huge congratulations to our boys' basketball teams for their impressive wins last night! Your teamwork, dedication, and resilience embody the values we strive to instill as an IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) school. We’re also proud to recognize the entire basketball program for the hard work and commitment you’ve shown throughout this season.
Our CMS One Act Play cast and crew continue to shine as well! They have advanced to the district One Act Competition, which will take place this Saturday, February 1, at 4 PM at Denton High School. Let’s show our support by cheering them on this weekend!
Next week, we’ll be celebrating our IB community builders and Honor Roll students on Friday, February 7. This recognition, originally scheduled for this week, was moved to this later date, and we are so excited to honor these exceptional students for their hard work and contributions to our school community.
Finally, the Transfer Window is now open! If you or someone you know is interested in enrolling a middle schooler in Denton ISD’s IB MYP program, we encourage you to join us for Rising 6th Grader Transition Night on Monday, February 10. This event is an excellent opportunity for families to learn more about the IB MYP at Calhoun Middle School.
Thank you for your continued support of our Colts!

This impressive win has earned them the opportunity to host their first tournament game. The 8th grade boys will face Celina MS on Thursday, February 6, at 5:30 PM.
Let’s also congratulate the 7th Grade Boys A Team, who finished 4th in the division! They will be traveling to Cheek MS for their first-round game on Thursday, February 6, at 6:30 PM.
Both teams have secured spots in the championship bracket, and the tournament will conclude on Saturday morning, February 8, at Guyer High School.

Mrs. Starnes and the Calhoun community are incredibly proud of the talented Cast and Crew of The Shape of the Grave! They’ve earned a spot in the District One Act competition this Saturday!
Special shoutouts to these outstanding company members who received awards:
Evan Brannon – Outstanding Technician Titus Ek & Nola Korom – Honorable Mention Acting Awards Rosie Mitchell & Bella Campuzano – All Star Acting Awards
Let’s all wish them "broken legs" as they head to the District competition this weekend!
We recently welcomed future Colts from Newton Rayzor, Evers, and Alexander Elementary for our Fine Arts Showcase, where rising 6th graders had the chance to explore the variety of Fine Arts courses available to them next year. Students learned about visual arts, orchestra, band, choir, and theater, giving them a firsthand look at the creative opportunities Calhoun offers.
This event is a key part of helping students make informed decisions about their middle school education, while sparking their creativity and interest in the arts. As we approach course selection time, we will send out additional resources to families to support their involvement in the process.
We’re excited to see so many future Colts discovering their artistic passions and can’t wait to welcome them to the Fine Arts programs at Calhoun next year!
February
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. For the month of February, we are Communicators!
Each of the attributes in the IB Learner Profile includes a "We" statement that describes how to embody the learner profile and highlights its importance. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student, and encourage them to embrace being an IB COMMUNICATOR.
"We express our ideas and thoughts with confidence, creativity, and clarity, whether we’re speaking, writing, or using technology. We are open to sharing our perspectives and using different ways to communicate, like visual tools or digital platforms, to connect with others. We listen actively and respectfully to different viewpoints, and we work together as a team, valuing everyone’s contributions. Whether in the classroom, on a project, or in daily conversations, we collaborate to solve problems, share knowledge, and support each other’s growth. "
