WHAT I'VE LEARNED:
Being a leader isn't about building your personal success, but building your team as a whole. It's important that you make your team feel heard and appreciated. It's been said that if you chose a job you love you will never work a day in your life. I hope to create a drive in staff members, making them excited to work everyday.
Having the opportunity to lead for the past three years, I have worked diligently to create a safe and encouraging working environment. I want the rest of the staff to have the same passion as I do. Not only should we be producing high quality work, but we should also love to produce it.
WHAT THE STAFF SAYS...
"Kate Bunnell introduced me to editing the yearbook my sophomore year, when I had no interest in it whatsoever. She showed me all the ups and ends of what she does everyday and how she does it. She spends countless hours of time in class and outside of class working to put out her best work. Kate showed me how the yearbook is more than just a book. Yearbooks stay in people's memories and houses for years, being able to look back at what a time it was to be in high school. Kate makes sure that every single year, without a doubt, that the yearbook is perfect and something that people will cherish for the rest of their lives."
SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER - RYLEE DICKERSON
"Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working under Bunnell's leadership, and it's been nothing short of amazing. Kate’s amazing organizational and communication skills have created a collaborative environment where working together feels easier than ever. It’s rare to find a leader who is so genuine—one where every staff member feels not only heard but valued. Kate is always ready to offer guidance and support to Mav Media members, regardless of their tasks. Her dedication to the yearbook is impeccable; she goes above and beyond every day, putting in countless hours to ensure our students have an outstanding book. Her work ethic and attention to detail are remarkable. Additionally, her contributions to the yearbook and our team are nothing short of amazing."
BUSINESS MANAGER - COOPER OXFORD
"Kate is a brilliant example of someone who exemplifies kindness, leadership, and motivation. She has always set high standards for herself and worked tirelessly to achieve them. She is a natural leader and frequently takes the lead in advising her classmates in the journalism program. Kate's ability to stay organized and inspire others by her dedication has earned her a reputation as someone people can count on when it matters most. Beyond her driven dedication with the yearbook staff, Kate is known for her kind heart. She has a unique ability to make others feel appreciated and understood and she frequently goes above and beyond to assist those in need. Everyone she works with feels included and supported by her leadership. Kate's motivation, leadership, and kindness not only sets her apart but also inspires those around her to strive for the best."
2024 STAFF MEMBER- MARY CATHERINE JOHNSTON
"Kate Bunnell is truly one of a kind. She was a freshman in yearbook when I was a senior, and she outworked half of our staff. Kate is incredibly creative, motivated, and excels at being both collaborative and unique. The work she has done in every book and project through journalism and yearbook is something to be proud of. Kate's contributions to yearbook have been outstanding, and I always enjoy seeing her work."
2022 PHOTO EDITOR- GABBY WOODIE
As my sister finished her virtual sophomore school year, due to the global shutdown of schools after the COVID pandemic, she beamed with excitement as she found out she would be returning to school as the new yearbook editor. While I was just finishing seventh grade, I did not have a full understanding of why she was so excited, or what she was going to get to do..........
All staff members have access to our shared google drive, where we post all things Mav Media. The following are all elements included in the drive.
I create a meeting agenda/notes page for every meeting. The pages are posted in the drive for staff to refer back to or to look at if they missed the meeting.
A TYPICAL MEETING
We hold formal staff meetings once every 2-3 weeks. I start the meetings by covering approaching deadlines and areas of improvement. We go over our current goals and progress, and then the staff has work time. During this time I encourage the staff to ask for help in any struggling areas, but I ensure them that they can reach out to me over email or text anytime for help.
As a way to guide and direct my staff, I have made "Walsworth Tutorials" for the Mav Media members to use in order to help navigate our yearbook program.
STAFF BIRTHDAYS
To acknowledge and celebrate the Mav Media staff, birthday posts are shared on all Mav Media social media platforms.
MAV MEDIA MEMBER OF THE MONTH
To highlight staff members we created a "Mav Media Member of the Month." A shoutout, where students get a certificate and social media post to highlight their success.
SELF CORRECTIONS:
No first take is perfect. When it comes to writing and designing, it's a process full of many drafts. These are a few of my first drafts and how they have been revised to better my skill in design.
EXAMPLE 1
MAIN EDITS:
Too much repetition on the right side. Edited to add more variety and in arrangement and size of pictures.
Took the dominant photo out of the gutter of the page.
EXAMPLE 2
EDITS:
Added theme elements of the 2024 book.
Put the picture looking into the page instead of off the page.
Made "August" more clear and dominant.
EXAMPLE 3
EDITS:
Slanted text was too hard to read and created an awkward space on the right side of the page.
Made the cutout of the nerf gun flow into the right page.
Created an organized mod with the bottom three photos.
FEEDBACK:
The best way to learn is to grow experience. I assist my staff by adding commentary and corrections onto their work. I firmly believe this is the best way to show them expectations and give them a better understanding of our work. Whether I am helping by giving feedback in class, or making comments on documents/spreads, I work to ensure Mav Media is producing our best work.
The skills I have learned during my journalism leadership position are highly transferable and have helped me secure many other leadership roles throughout my high school career.
FBLA:
I was able to apply the skills I learned through the business side of journalism and hold an officer position, all four years, for the FBLA chapter at my school.

Working in journalism, yearbook especially, I have learned tremendous design techniques. I am now serving as Social Media Officer for our senior council. I make graphics to promote senior events, using skills I have learned through yearbook.

SWIM TEAM:
Serving as Yearbook Editor, I have grown so much as a leader. I am now serving my second year as swim captain. Journalism has shown me how to lead and motivate a group of students, so I apply those same skills throughout the swim team.
