WHAT I'VE LEARNED:
Everyone deserves recognition. In order to give all students acknowledgement, we need to implement certain techniques. As a staff we do not know every student personally, so we need to connect to our audience as much as possible through social media and other opportunities.
Journalism is for EVERYONE! In the 300 page yearbook, I have worked to show the accomplishments of all 2,100 students at Southside High School. I think it is extremely important that everyone feels represented and seen in the yearbook.
As a Walsworth Scholarship opportunity, I created a video that shows all the diversity I have implemented into my books.

A TRIP TO INDIA
As the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year came to a close, many students enjoyed the break in different ways. Whether it was to see family or enjoy a vacation, most students left Fort Smith during some portion of the three week break. However, senior Ananya Taggarsee took a different approach to the break, and traveled across seas to Hyderabad, India.......
WHAT I LEARNED:
Through interviewing and writing about my classmate's winter break trip to India, I gained a better understanding of how different each student's story is. While I had seen pictures of her trip on social media, I had no idea how much she got to see and do, or how going to India has been a part of her childhood. This story truly showed me how important it is to listen to those around us, because we have so much to learn from each other.
CLUB SECTION
Inside each book we have a club section, where all clubs and organizations get a group photo. From Asian Culture Club to French Club, Dungeons and Dragons, GSA, and many more, our club section features all 38 active clubs at Southside High School.

STUDENT FEATURES
As seen in the video, these are the feature student spreads in the 2024 book.
This is a student feature I did for the 2022 yearbook. I interviewed a senior who had skills in makeup. The feature is in the portrait section of the 59th volume of The Southerner pg. 230.
Also discussed in the video, we put out "student spotlights" to showcase students with outstanding accomplishments. Students are able to fill out a QR code posted around the school and on social media to apply for the spotlight.
Through Walsworth Yearbooks, we offer on our store front the option to donate a book.
This allows for economically disadvantaged families to receive help/donations of yearbooks, because they are truly made for everyone to enjoy.
We have also had coupon codes (shown in marketing) avaliable for discounted prices on books.
The Mav Media organization is for anyone to join. We have staff members from all different backgrounds and who are involved in all different types of clubs and extracurricular activities.
Our job is to write and produce stories and spreads on the entire student body, so it is so important to have a diverse staff in order to appropriately cover everyone.
