What is an Apple School?

We are an APPLE School. What Does That Mean?

It means that your child’s school strives to provide healthy options whenever food is served at the school. It also means that this school receives funding from APPLE Schools, a health promotion organization. Every APPLE school has a designated School Health Champion who will ensure active living, healthy eating, and mental health remain a priority throughout the school year.

FAQs about APPLE Schools

  1. Does APPLE Schools have criteria for what I pack in my child’s lunch?

No, APPLE Schools is not about policing food choices or creating shame for students. The project has no messages about good vs. bad food, or calories. APPLE Schools promotes balance and uses Alberta Health Services’ recommended language, which is choose most often, choose sometimes, and choose least often.

2. Can I bring treats for special occasions?

The Fort McMurray Catholic School District has an operating policy (OP 138) which states that all food given to children in the school will be entirely from the choose-most-often category. This ensures that any food your child receives in the school is healthy.

3. Can I help with any of the APPLE Schools initiatives?

Absolutely! Find out from the school’s principal who the designated School Health Champion is. They would love to have your input and support for healthy initiatives. Support could include helping serve hot lunch, organizing wellness days, or assisting with creating the monthly campaign bulletin boards.
