One of the biggest holidays in November is Thanksgiving. As we move towards truth and reconciliation in the teaching of history, we acknowledge that US schools have perpetuated the teaching of American Mythology as historical fact. The myth of The First Thanksgiving is ingrained in the American psyche, and conscious deliberate efforts must be taken in order to dismantle this harmful lie and replace it with a more accurate version of this holiday's history, including an analysis of its purpose and impact.
Samuel Leamon Younge Jr. (November 17, 1944 – January 3, 1966) was a civil rights and voting rights activist who was murdered for trying to desegregate a "whites only" restroom. Younge was an enlisted service member in the United States Navy, where he served for two years before being medically discharged. Younge was an active member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and a leader of the Tuskegee Institute Advancement League.
