This month we feature National Poverty In America Awareness Month, Korean American Day, Makar Sankranti, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and International Day of Education. We also highlight the life and legacy of author and educator, Zora Neale Hurston. Korean American Day honors the contributions of the Korean American community to the United States and commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants on January 13, 1903. In 2005, the U.S. Senate and House passed resolutions by unanimous consent expressing support for the goals and aspirations of Korean American Day. Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival dedicated to the god of the sun, Surya. This special day is celebrated on January 15th, and is the first celebration of the calendar year. Makar Sankranti marks the first day of the sun's transit into Makara (Capricorn). January 20th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! The sixth annual International Day of Education will be January 24th. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24th as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Zora Neale Hurston was born January 7, 1891. Hurston was "the most successful and most significant black woman writer of the first half of the 20th century. Over a career that spanned more than 30 years, she published four novels, two books of folklore, an autobiography, numerous short stories, and several essays, articles and plays" (ZoraNealeHurston.com).
