On March 2, 1955, at the age of 15, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white woman on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, and was subsequently arrested. This incident occurred nine months before Rosa Parks' more widely known act of civil disobedience on a Montgomery bus. Even though she isn't widely known, Claudette Colvin is, in fact, an African American woman who played a crucial role in the early civil rights movement in the United States.
