ABIDE stands for Advancing Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity, and is the namesake of the schools and programs staff council that works together on DEIB initiatives within the schools and programs branch of Five Keys. The ABIDE Council is made up of staff members and leaders from both Northern and Southern California that are passionate about advancing access, belonging, inclusion, diversity, equity and justice. Council members have pledged a commitment to this work in addition to their regular work roles in order to actualize a renewed legacy at Five Keys.
The ABIDE Council was created as a direct response to the racial and political unrest that exploded after the horrific murder and modern-day public lynching of George Floyd in May of 2020. It was imperative to our leadership that, as a social justice organization, we address the inequities in our society and organization strategically and consistently. Since then, the Council has evolved into a strong group of leaders and activists dedicated to the urgently necessary work of antiracism and anti-oppression.
The Council decided on a name in 2021. After careful consideration, members decided on the acronym ABIDE, which stands for "Advancing Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity." In 2021, the Council also organized itself into three committees to drive our work: Communication, Culture, and Learning and Development. Each committee has an Executive Sponsor whose role is to support and advocate for the work of their committee at the executive level.
The ABIDE Council Charter was created in 2022, and our Real Time Strategic Plan (RTSP) has been in development since Spring 2023. These documents describe the functions and purpose of the Council, and formalize the existence and work of the Council throughout the agency. The ABIDE Culture Committee curates resources around the groups, events, and holidays honored and recognized each month. The purpose of this resource is to support staff members in creating and sustaining safe, inclusive, restorative, joyful, healing spaces throughout our agency.
This is a living site that changes and grows as we include more resources . We aim to be as inclusive as possible--if you would like to see something added, please reach out to abideculture@fivekeys.org with your suggestions!
The Learning and Development Committee hosts weekly virtual field trips that center social justice issues. These virtual learning opportunities are held every Friday, from 1pm-2pm. Students have the opportunity to earn credit in various subjects while learning together with students and teachers from across all Five Keys regions. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), sometimes known as affinity groups, or diversity groups, are groups formed by employees who join together based on common interests, backgrounds, job status, or demographic actors such as gender, culture, race, ethnicity, and military or disability status. These voluntary, employee-led groups are meant to foster a diverse, inclusive workplace.

The Five Keys Pedagogical Framework was developed in partnership with our Curriculum and Instruction Team. This framework centers culturally responsive, abolitionist, and decolonial philosophies and pedagogical practices. This collaborative effort is offering training opportunities that align with the framework throughout the school year.
The Social Justice Book Club meets virtually to dive into empowering content that aligns to the missions of both our agency and our Council, and to the philosophies and pedagogical practices that make up our Pedagogical Framework. All staff members are encouraged to participate!

The ABIDE Council Student Advisory Committee (SAC) serves as a representative voice for students. The valuable insight that students provide through this committee guides the ABIDE Council in better addressing the needs of our students and school community.
