Rejection Codes

The following is a list of the most common reasons the IRS will reject an e-filed return and how to fix them accordingly within our software:

IND-180: Primary taxpayer's Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) must match the e-File database. Please double check your entry and resubmit your return with the correct number.

What does this rejection mean?

This means that the IRS has rejected your return due to an incorrect or missing IP-PIN.  If you believe that the IRS did not issue you an IP-PIN, but you have a rejection that the IRS is requiring an IP-PIN, you need to contact the IRS. If you do not believe you have been issued an IP-PIN, but have entered something in that field, remove the information and leave that box empty.  If you did report identity theft to the IRS, the IRS issued you an IP-PIN, because that is their process to help victims of identity theft.  The IRS process to issue an IP-PIN is described at the IRS.gov website: https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin

The IRS should have provided you with your IP-PIN in a letter sent to you, or if you self-registered for an IP-PIN, it may have been provided to you online.  For more information about retrieving your IP-PIN, please see the IRS resource at https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

The IRS does not allow tax software companies or tax preparers to access or change your IP-PIN.  You will need to work directly with the IRS to obtain your IP-PIN.

Once you enter or correct your IP-PIN entry, you can resubmit your return to the IRS for processing.  There is no fee to resubmit a rejected tax return to the IRS.

How to fix the rejection with FileYourTaxes.com:

IND-031: 'PrimaryTaxpayerPriorYearPIN' or 'PrimaryTaxpayerPriorYearAGIAmt' in the Return Header must match the e-File database.

What does this rejection mean?

The IRS has rejected your 2023 Federal Tax Return because the Prior Year AGI or Prior Year PIN entered does not match what the IRS has on file. See https://www.irs.gov/individuals/electronic-filing-pin-request for additional information regarding electronic signature requirements.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/electronic-filing-pin-request

If you filed your 2022 Tax Return by paper (mailed it to IRS), did not file a 2022 Tax Return, or if you are entering the Prior Year AGI from your tax return or transcript and the IRS is still rejecting your return, we recommend that you enter zero into the Prior Year AGI box, and leave the Prior Year Pin box blank.  In most cases, the IRS will process the return with zero entered as the Prior Year AGI if they reject the correct value. The IRS does not provide tax software companies or tax preparers the expected Prior Year AGI or Prior Year PIN.

You can find details about your rejected return by selecting "Get eFile Status" on the Navigation Page.

If you do not know your Prior Year AGI, or Prior Year PIN, you will need to go to the IRS website http://www.irs.gov and from their homepage select “Get Your Tax Record".

There are two ways to obtain a tax transcript. One is electronically (this is the quickest way), and the second is by mail. You will find information about this on the IRS website.

How to fix the rejection with FileYourTaxes.com:

1. Select “Work With Filing.” for the tax year you are constructing from your Dashboard

2. On the Navigation Page select "Edit a return in progress."

3. On the Summary Page locate the Payment and Filing Method section. This is located at the bottom of the page.

4. Click on the blue word "eSignature". This will open the Federal Signature Page. You can make your changes on this page.

Once the update has been made, select to start the return filing process and resubmit the electronic filing.

If you continue to have this rejection, the IRS will require that the return be paper-filed.

IND-032: 'SpousePriorYearPIN' or 'SpousePriorYearAGIAmt' in the Return Header must match the e-File database.

What does this rejection mean?

The IRS has rejected your 2023 Federal Tax Return because the Spouses Prior Year AGI or Prior Year PIN entered does not match what the IRS has on file. See https://www.irs.gov/individuals/electronic-filing-pin-request for additional information regarding electronic signature requirements.

IND-452: In an original return, the Primary SSN in the Return Header must not be the same as the TIN of a previously accepted electronic Individual return for the same tax period.

What does this rejection mean?

This means that the IRS records indicate that a return has already been created and submitted with that SSN for the same tax year. If the information is correct and you do not believe a tax return was filed elsewhere, the return will need to be paper filed and we suggest contacting the IRS.

R000-500-01: The Primary Taxpayer's SSN or last name does not match the IRS eFile database.

What does this rejection mean?

The IRS matches the first 4 letters of your last name against your Social Security number and DOB. If they do not match, the IRS will reject the return. You will need to review the information entered for Name, DOB, and SSN.  Please make sure that the first 4 letters of your last name match your Social Security card exactly. If your last name is too long for the field, make sure the first 4 letters match. If the SSN or DOB are entered incorrectly, you can fix this on the Taxpayer Information Page.

How to fix the rejection with FileYourTaxes.com:

1. Select“Work With Filing” for the tax year you are constructing from your Dashboard

2. Select “Edit a Return in Progress” on the Navigation Page

3. Once on the Summary Page, click on "Taxpayer Information"

You should be able to correct your social security there.

FW2-502: Form W-2, Line B 'EmployerEIN' must match data in the eFile database.

How to fix the rejection with FileYourTaxes.com:

These fields are alpha-numeric only, meaning you can only enter letters A-Z and numbers 0-9 in these fields. Periods, slashes, dashes, and commas will not be accepted. Special characters will also not be accepted in these fields. Please edit the employer name and address accordingly to remove these special characters. This will not affect the filing of your return.

If you are continuing to have this issue after removing the symbols or special characters, please send us the full employer name and address exactly as you are entering it so that we can look into your issue.

Once it has been updated, you will need to resubmit your filing.

To resubmit your filing:

If the EIN that you have listed on your W-2 matches the one you have entered and it is still getting rejected, please contact the issuer of the W-2 to verify that the EIN is the correct number. If you contact the issuer and they verify that the EIN that is getting rejected is the one they have on record, they will need to call the IRS to let them know about the inconsistency in filing.

F1040-068-03: If Form 1040, 'EarnedIncomeCreditAmt' has a non-zero value and Schedule EIC (Form 1040) is not present, then the Primary or Spouse must be at least 25 years old but less than 65 years old.

What does this rejection mean?

The IRS has rejected this filing because the date of birth for the taxpayer or spouse does not match the IRS database. You can update the these on the taxpayer or spouse information page under Forms In Return. If the DOB is correct, you will need to contact the IRS or Social Security Administration to verify the information.
