This page includes information on how to prepare a Federal Amendment Form 1040-X and preparing State Amendments in the program.  


Refer to the IRS Form 1040-X Instructions, or the applicable State Amendment Instructions.


Step 1. Log into your account at FileYourTaxes.com


Step 2. Select "Work With Filing" for the applicable tax year


Step 3. Select "Edit A Return".  This will bring you to the page shown above. From there, you will select "Click here to amend a return" in blue writing


IMPORTANT

The Amendment Link will only be available once all tax returns filed and accepted. 


If a State Return has not been filed with the Federal Return, the state return must be either filed and accepted, or removed from the account, to access the Federal Amendment.  


Step 1: Select 1040-X to Amend


This will bring you to the Summary Page of your filed return. You will click on "Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return" on the left hand side under Forms in Return.

Superseding Returns:


A superseding return is a return filed subsequent to the originally-filed return and filed within the filing period (including extensions).

A superseding return must be a complete XML filing of the entire return, with all required forms, schedules and attachments (XML or PDF, if applicable). A taxpayer filing a superseding return must indicate the return is such by selecting the Superseded Return checkbox (designation) in the software or the return will reject as a duplicate filing.

Note: You will not see a checkbox or selection entitled "Superseding Return" available on the paper forms.

All of the business rules for e-filing original Form 1120, 1120-S and 1120-F returns will be enforced for superseding returns.

Extension Payment:

Enter amount of payment sent with a filed extension.


Tax Paid:

Enter the amount paid with the original return, along with any payments made after filing.   


Explanation of Changes to Income, Deductions, and Credits:


Overpayment:

When the original return included an overpayment (expected refund), that amount will be carried over automatically. 


Warning: 

If the original return was adjusted by the IRS, and the overpayment amount was changed, you MUST enter this amount in manually.


Explanation of Changes:

Enter the reason for the amendment, include details on what was changed and amounts (if applicable). 



Step 3: Make Changes

After you Save & Continue on the 1040-X, you will need to select on the left hand side of your return, under Forms in Return what page you need to make your changes for the aended return. In this example, we indicated that we needed to add another W-2 to the return. 

In this case, you would select "Add New" to add another W-2.


Step 4: Start Amendment Filing Process


Once you are done with all of your edits and Save & Continue, you will be on the Amendment Summary page.


On the top right hand corner, you will select "Start Amendment Filing Process"

This bring you to "Done With Editing" page.


Click on the box that says "Click here to eFile the Federal Amendment"

Congratulations! Your Federal Amendment is being filed!


Select "Save & Continue"
