ESSAY CONTEST: Keeping with our mission to connect, inform and inspire, The Economic Club of Grand Rapids works with The Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University each year to sponsor a high school economic essay contest. This contest, open to 9th-12th grade students, helps bring interest to the relevant topics of economics to our community’s high school students as well as investment in our future leaders’ careers.
Students wishing to enter their essay for consideration can find the complete details on the Economic Club website (HERE). The submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 30th 2026 at 12:00PM.
SCHOLARSHIP: The newly established Sophia Knape Legacy Scholarship will soon be open for current seniors interested in applying. Sophia, a 2015 graduate from Forest Hills Central, participated in Odyssey of the Mind for many years; like all good OMers, she brought creativity, enthusiasm, and leadership to her team. Sophia tragically passed away in 2023. To honor and celebrate her legacy, her family has endowed an annual scholarship of not less than $1500. This opportunity is open to any FHPS senior who (1) participated in Odyssey of the Mind for at least two years and (2) is pursuing any type of continuing education after high school. The submission deadline is February 15, 2026; further details and application materials are forthcoming and will be announced on our website soon.
In addition, there are state and national OM scholarships available to seniors. The Michigan body provides several $500 scholarships each year, while the national organization has multiple scholarships ranging from $500 - $1000. SCHOLARSHIP: Established in 1990, the LMCU Lloyd Hutt Scholarship program honors the legacy of Lloyd F. Hutt—teacher and founder of LMCU. Each year, LMCU will establish a prompt for high school seniors to write about in the form of an essay and award twenty (20) $2,000 scholarships. LMCU is proud to have provided over $580,000 in scholarships to 332 deserving students over the years. The entry period for the 2026 graduating class is open now through December 15th, 2025. SCHOLARSHIP: PFCU strives to be a leader in empowering students, specifically graduating seniors, to continue their education. In that spirit, PFCU plans on continuing the scholarship tradition through the McCrumb Scholarship, just through a different process. PFCU Credit Union has established a community charitable foundation and will now process the McCrumb Scholarship requests. Applications will be accepted from March 1, 2025 through April 30, 2025.

SCHOLARSHIP: The Forest Hills Business Association offers an annual scholarship for Seniors or college students living within the Forest Hills Public School district. Each year, they award two scholarships: one for $1,500 and one for $750. The application can be found HERE, and the deadline for completing and submitting is March 26th.
SCHOLARSHIP: The University of Michigan Club of Grand Rapids is pleased to continue in its long tradition of providing 4 years of scholarship funding to students from West Michigan attending the University of Michigan. The Grand Rapids Club has the largest scholarship program of any regional U-M alumni clubs in the country.
High school seniors considering the University of Michigan are encouraged to apply for the Club’s scholarship. Last year we awarded 16 scholarships of $4,750 per year to area students and hope to have a similar number this year. SCHOLARSHIP: Treadstone Funding, a Grand Rapids residential mortgage company, recently launched a new scholarship program: the Hustle and Heart Scholarship. They have committed to proving $20,000 in scholarships (four $5,000 scholarships) to local teens that are making a difference. Unlike traditional scholarships based solely on academic performance, Treadstone’s scholarships are character-based, designed to recognize hardworking and driven students who have demonstrated a meaningful impact on their communities. SCHOLARSHIPS: The West Michigan Veterans Coalition will be awarding a total of 12 scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year ranging from $1000 to $1500. Dependent Scholarships are available for the children/dependents of parents who serve/d in any branch of the US armed forces (including USCG), Michigan National Guard, or reserves, from one of the previously identified counties. There are three scholarship programs available for those who serve(d) in the US Armed Forces or spouses/dependents, with each having its own eligibility criteria and application. SCHOLARSHIP: The University Club of Grand Rapids Scholarship Foundation has been established for individuals in the West Michigan area who intend to build, support, and serve the West Michigan community after graduation.
The amount of this scholarship is $1000. It may be renewed for three additional, consecutive years upon the completion of a Renewable Application form. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher (or comparable performance) each year for renewal. This comes to a $4000 total over four years.

Our grand prize winner now receives $20,000 through four payments of $5,000 (each of the winner’s first four semesters at college or trade school). And because we know life can be unpredictable and interruptions to educational goals happen, the grand prize winner can access those funds over five years. SCHOLARSHIP: Since 2009, the Friends of Cascade Library have offered a scholarship to graduating seniors attending Forest Hills Public Schools who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteering in the community. To date, they have awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships to 18 exceptional young volunteers from FHPS who live in the Cascade Library service area. The winners will be announced at Senior Recognition. No parents of seniors serve on the decision making board for ABC senior awards.

SCHOLARSHIP: The U of M Club of Grand Rapids currently provides financial aid to over 60 students from West Michigan who are attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The scholarships are awarded for four years and currently $4,000 per year per student. In addition to meeting academic qualifications, students must demonstrate financial need and outstanding citizenship. SCHOLARSHIP: The West Michigan Veterans Coalition Armed Forces Dependent Scholarship is available to Spouses and Dependent Children up to age 26 of Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves, Retired and honorable Discharged Service Members who are currently attending either a College, University or Trade School or a High School Senior. The DK Sprague Educational Scholarship Endowment has been developed by the Gun Lake Tribe in order to provide financial assistance to high schools students in Allegan, Barry, Kent, Kalamazoo, and Ottawa counties. Scholarship recipients will receive an award in the amount of $20,000. SCHOLARSHIP: The Friends of the Cascade Library are offering two separate awards to current seniors, each in the amount of $1,500, to be given to two high school seniors residing in Cascade or Ada townships who best exemplify the volunteer spirit. The volunteer service in question should be civic and secular in nature, with an emphasis on community assistance and/or improvement. GRCC SCHOLARSHIP: The Grand Rapids Community College Foundation Scholarship Application is now open. This application is available to all students admitted to GRCC. Applicants are considered for over 300 different opportunities and over one million dollars in scholarship funds by completing the general application.
Students simply visit https://grcc.academicworks.com/users/sign_in and log in using their GRCC Blackboard log-in.
The priority deadline to submit applications is March 15th, 2019. Please note that if students have not earned at least 12 credits from GRCC, they MUST submit a high school transcript showing 7 complete semesters.
