The FAFSA is not just for people who want or need federal student loans. Its purpose is also to determine aid you will not have to pay back, like scholarships, grants, and even work-study funding. Even families who may think they will not qualify are encouraged to complete the FAFSA, as there may be funds in the form of grants or scholarships that thier prospective college student may be able to access.

The CSS is an online application to determine eligibility for non-federal financial aid, which is administered by College Board. Not every college requires it, but nearly 400 colleges do, so be sure to first check the list of schools to determine whether you need to complete the application. It is also important to see if the school requires students of divorced parents to complete the additional Noncustodial PROFILE.
