FINANCING COLLEGE
Common Ways to Finance College
- Family/personal savings
- Student employment
- FAFSA (Free Application for Student Assistance) at www.fafsa.ed.gov
The FAFSA opens on October 1 each year. Government aid is solely need-based and includes Work Study, Grants (i.e. Pell Grant), and Loans (i.e. Stafford Loans).
- Institutional Aid
Insitutional aid is grant and scholarship money provided by the university or college itself. Usually, institutional aid is merit-based, meaning the college awards it based on academic achievement, sports, or special talents. Check the college’s Financial Aid website for scholarships that may require separate applications.
- Private Scholarships
These competitive scholarships are sponsored by private companies, non-profit organizations, or private citizens.
