Sally Mann (b.1951) is a master of candid portraiture, celebrated for her deeply personal work often depicting those closest to her. The American photographer gained prominence in the late 1980s with her series ‘At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women’, capturing the children of friends and relatives in her home state of Virginia. However, it was her series ‘Immediate Family’ that truly propelled her career. Moving, controversial, and now iconic, this intimate collection predominantly features her three children against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland summer home in Virginia. Released as a book in 1992, it remains a seminal piece of fine art and documentary photography, continuing to influence and provoke debate today.

TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED

• Talk with your parents, grandparents, and other family about past generations.

• Do they know what country your family line originates?

• Do you have any physical attributes that may connect you or your family members to your “homeland?”

• Do you have physical attributes shared by other family members?

• Consider traditions:

• What traditions do you maintain that extend back generations?

• What traditions exist within your immediate family?

• What food traditions exist within your family?

• Consider objects and places?

• Do you or your family members have things passed down through generations?

• What about clothing passed from siblings or your parents?

• How long have you been in your current home?

• Are there places that are important to your family for any reason?

• Don’t be afraid to take multiple pictures and test out different viewpoints. Experiment!

Upload, and Download to Computer Graphics (P) Drive

HOW TO UPLOAD YOUR IMAGES FROM YOUR PHONE :

You must have the Google Drive App on your phone.
Open you photo library and select your images for this project.
Click on the upload icon - it is a square with an arrow pointing up
Choose Google Drive - Upload

HOW TO DOWNLOAD YOUR IMAGES TO YOUR COMPUTER GRAPHICS (P) DRIVE:

WE WILL DO THIS TOGETHER!! THIS IS SOMETHING NEW

Click on the first image
Hold down the shift button and click on the last image - this will select all of them
Click on the download icon or right click - Download
Go to your downloads on the desktop
Open the zip file
Select all images
Copy
Go to the computer graphics (P) drive
Personal and your name should appear
Open your folder and paste the images there.
Delete the images in the download section - That way the images do not take up space in the download section

Editing your images:

We will do the 1st one together

Open photoshop
Open your 1st image
Rotate if you need to
Crop if you need to
Make sure your image is selected in the layers panel
Go to Filter - Camera Raw - Auto Exposure - Auto White Balance
Ok will take you back to photoshop
File - Export - Export As
Highest quality
Save to your computer Graphics (P) drive

Uploading to your Google Sites Portfolio:

Open your Google Sites Portfolio
Click on the pages tab - Add a new page - Family Heritage
Make a title
Add the content block with 3 images and 3 text blocks
Add the content block with 2 images and 2 content blocks
Insert image - from computer - Computer Graphics (P) drive - Personal - your name - find image
In text box - tell me about the image and how it is significant to your family
Continue with all 5 images.
Publish - Publish
