STEP 1: Choosing your letter and image
•Choose a letter out of the basket
•Do a Google image search for a high resolution image of an animal that begins with the same letter as the letter you have picked. You can also look on schoology at the folder of High
Resolution images and download them. Save the image(s) to your (P) drive
•Save at least 2 images just in case one of the doesn't work.
STEP 2: Setting up your workspace in PS
•Change the Width to 14 Inches
•Change the Height to 14 Inches
•Make sure the resolution is 300
•Make sure the background color is white
•Click Create - Your workspace should be a square.
STEP 3: Adding and Adjusting Your TEXT Letter
•Click on the text icon from the toolbar at the left side of the screen •Click once on the workspace Delete what shows up and add your
•Select a dense font - So you are able to work with incorporating your
•Select the text layer and click CTRL T to transform your letter. Make
the letter large and centered but leave space to add your animal.
•Make sure you have the text layer selected and press Ctrl J to duplicate the layer. You can also right click and go to duplicate layer
•You will need this layer later.....
•File Place embedded - your animal image.
•Make sure you have that layer selected and lower the opacity so that you can see the letter
•Be sure you are still on the animal layer and press Ctrl T. Move and adjust your animal image
to where you would like it to be. Make sure it somehow fits with your letter shape.
•When you like how your image fits the letter, bring the opacity back up to 100%
•Be sure the animal image layer is selected and RT click in the gray space -
•Select that bottom text layer and change the color of the letter to medium gray - you will not
see the letter because the layers above are covering it.
•If you do not see the properties window, go to window at the top of the screen and click on properties. The properties window should now be open. Click on the color rectangle next to color and choose a medium gray
• Be sure that bottom layer is selected and click Ctrl T •Use the arrow button to move the gray letter to create a 3D effect.
•Select that animal image layer - Rt click - Duplicate layer.
•Drag that layer between the two text layers.
•RT click on the layer in the gray space - Create Clipping Mask
•Be sure the bottom image layer is selected
•Click on the adjustment layer at the bottom of the layers panel - The half filled in circle. •Select Exposure - Right click next the the Exposure layer - Create Clipping Mask
•Double click on the =/- part of the exposure layer - Move the exposure slider to the left until you can see a difference in the images. Don't make it black, we still want to see the image. You can adjust the offset and gamma slightly if you would like.
•Once you are happy with the way it looks, you can close the properties window.
•Select the top animal image layer - Right Click - duplicate layer - Title it cut out
•Rt click on the cut out layer and release clipping mask
•You will now see only the full animal image.
•With that layer still selected, click on the quick selection tool. •Select Subject - Your
computer will / should select only the animal.
•If it does not, you may need to use the + or - to select or deselect areas of your image.
•Once you are happy with the selection, click on the mask button - the white rectangle with a hole in the middle
•Your image should appear similar to the one below. You may need to click on the mask icon and clean it up some with the brush tool and the black and white tool.
•Select the TOP text layer
•In that layer to the right in the gray space - double LEFT click
•Click on The FX icon at the bottom of the layers panel and select STROKE
A pop up window will appear.
•Click on the + and adjust the size between 5 and 10
•Click inside of the color box to change the color - move your cursor over your image and you should see a dropper tool.
•Click around on your image until you find a border color that you like.
File - Export - Export As
Add to your typography page on your portfolio
Publish - Publish - Turn in
