Year 6 Spring

Portraits

Children will look at a wide range of portrait artists and styles in this unit and really encouraged to develop their own preferences and styles. They will have the opportunity to use a range of mediums, including pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolours and acrylic paints. They will develop their proficiency in drawing and painting in increasing detail and create their own self-portrait as a final piece.

Children began the unit by exploring a range of portrait artists then used view finders to copy a section of a portrait. They were able to choose which mediums they used.

Then, children developed their pencil drawing technique by drawing a portrait from a photograph. Children practised blending and shading and experimented with techniques for adding finer detail.

Children explored a range of abstract artists and explored this style by copying half of a famous portrait using their own choice of medium.

After looking at a range of portrait styles and artists, children used their own style and choice of medium to create their own self-portrait.
