Roman-Inspired Artwork

In this unit, children look artwork that was created in Roman times, including intricate mosaics and pottery. They design their own mosaic and sculpt their own Roman-inspired clay pot.

Children began this unit by investigating Roman mosaics. They looked at the colours and designed used, then had a go at sketching their own mosaic ideas before making some simple paper mosaic patterns.

Children used their designs from the first session to make mosaics from tiles. They thought about which colours they wanted to use and how to create an effect design just by using square tiles.

Children began the second half of this unit by exploring Roman pottery. They thought about the colours used, the shapes and the detail added. Children also considered what the uses of the pots and vases would have been during Roman times.

Children then copied the style of the Roman pots and created their own designs on them, which they would try to include in their own pots.

Finally, children designed their own Roman-inspired pot. They used a coil technique to form the shape of their pot and used carving and scoring techniques to add finer detail.
