Year 5 Summer

David Hockney

In this unit, children will explore the work of Yorkshire-born David Hockney. They will explore his use of colours and mediums before doing some observational drawings in his style. Finally, children will use photographs and memories from their residential to the Yorkshire Dales to create their own Hockney-inspired landscape painting.

Children spend lots of time exploring the techniques, colours and mediums used by Hockney. They developed their knowledge of colour mixing by matching the colours they could see in Hockney's 'Gallowby Hill', and make notes about the colours they had mixed together to create their samples.

The children used pastel and paint to recreate sections of Hockney's artwork. They focussed on his painting techniques and colour used.

Taking inspiration from Hockney's 'Yorkshire Sketchbook', children took their sketchbooks and pastels outside to create some observational drawings. They thought carefully about the details and colours to include.

To complete this unit, the children used some photographs taken on their residential to the Yorkshire Dales to create their own landscape paintings. The children used acrylic paints and took inspiration from Hockney's painting techniques, colours and level of detail included.
