Year 4 Autumn

Georgia O'Keeffe

In this unit, children will learn about the artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. Children will develop their proficiency in drawing and painting by recreating artwork by Georgia O'Keeffe, developing their understanding of colour mixing with paint and creating their own landscape painting inspired by an American landscape and O'Keeffe's work. Children will have the opportunity to evaluate O'Keeffe's artwork and experiment with a range of mediums to develop their own artistic style.

Children started by evaluating a piece of O'Keeffe's artwork. They were asked to think about the colours, shapes and techniques used, as well as share their personal opinions.

Children revisited tones, tints and shades that they learnt in Year 3. They investigated the colours used in O'Keeffe's artwork and experimented with recreating them in paint.

Children experimented with different mediums to recreate a section of O'Keeffe's artwork. They evaluated how effective each medium was at recreating the style of O'Keeffe.

The children took inspiration from O'Keeffe's artwork to create their own landscapes. They chose which medium they felt would be most effective and thought carefully about which colours, shapes and techniques to use.
