Mr. Korey
About the PLD Band
Welcome to band, one of the greatest groups you can be a part of at Perry L. Drew!
Students will have band twice a week: 1 lesson during the school day and 1 rehearsal before school starts.
Band lessons are a pull-out class. This means that band lessons happen at a time arranged by your child's homeroom teacher and myself.
All band students come together to perform two concerts, once in the winter and once in the spring. Please see the Concerts section for more information!
Supplies
Students will need the following supplies for band:
an instrument
a band folder (I will hand these out)
a band book (Essential Elements for Band Book 1 for their instrument. This should come with rented instruments)
a pencil
Instrument Rentals
To participate in the band program, your child will need an instrument. We recommend renting an instrument through any of the retailers listed below, as they make the process very simple:
We would like to begin playing instruments soon, so please rent as soon as you can.
If renting an instrument is not financially possible at this time, please email me and we will get an instrument in your child's hands.
Concerts
Students in the Perry L. Drew band have two concerts during the school year! This year, our winter concert will be held at the end of January, and our spring concert will be in May. Both concerts will be held at Hightstown High School.
Attire:
At all age levels, school bands typically wear "concert black" on performance nights. Concert black will always mean a black shirt with black pants or a black dress with matching shoes. White shirts with black pants as well as white dresses are also acceptable.
Concert black attire excludes sweatshirts, sweatpants, jeans, and sneakers.
Values of the PLD Band
The PLD band strives to give students important values that will help them within and beyond the classroom. We also aim to prepare them to be music-makers beyond PLD. We do so by guiding them to embody these core values:
Perseverance: Keeping going even when things get hard
Respect: Holding others and yourself in high esteem
Innovation: Coming up with new ideas when old ones don't work
Dependability: Being trustworthy and reliable
Enthusiasm: Feelings of energy and excitement
More values that lead to succeeding in band:
Unity: Committing to the common goal of the band
Cooperation: Working with others and letting others work with you
Open-Mindedness: Willing to listen to others and try out their ideas
Grading & Syllabus
Students are graded on a 1-4 scale every week. Please see the performance rubric here as well as the syllabus for more information.
