Greetings, First Grade Families!
This week we learned all about Pluto and the other dwarf planets! Ask you student why Pluto was demoted from a planet to a dwarf planet. There is only one reason! We are working hard in our research groups to put together some super awesome collaborative projects. We can't wait to showcase them at our upcoming EoL on Monday, November 17 at 9:00am in the gym!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Home Learning comes home today and will be due back on Friday, November 7th. We will be skipping pages 19-22 as optional. The assignment this week is pages 23-28. Directions below!
Exhibition of Learning will be on Monday, November 17 at 9:00am in the gym!
Presentation of Learning (PoL) sign ups are now available in Skyward! PoL's will be held on Monday, November 24 from 12:30-6, and Tuesday November 25 from 8:30-3:30. PoL's are your opportunity to sit down with your first grader (and me) and let them show you the wonderful things they've been doing this trimester!
Vision screening will be on Tuesday, November 18th.
Send a snack to school with your first grader every day:)
REMINDERS:
School instruction begins at 8:25! Please ensure your student arrives at school before this time. Breakfast is served from 8:05-8:25. If you'd like your first grader to have school breakfast, they must arrive during this time. We clean up breakfast and start our day promptly at 8:25--we have lots to do!

Hey 1st grade families,
Home learning binders are coming home again with math activities to complete. The math pages this week are 23 - 28! Remember that it is due the following Friday which is November 7th.
Helpful terms this week include:
Count on - a faster form of counting which involves starting at the larger number (example for a domino with 6 and 3 more dots: 6, 7, 8, 9)
Fact Family - a group of equations that are related by using the same numbers (example: 3 + 1 = 4 and 4 - 1 = 3)
Skip Counting - counting by a number other than 1 ( 5, 10, 15, 20 or 2, 4, 6, 8)
Number Tree - a way to show numbers of a fact family. The biggest number sits on top of the tree which looks like ^. The numbers that add up to the biggest number would go below on the 'branches' of the tree.
Firstly, you may notice that we skipped pages 19-22. You are certainly welcome to complete these extra pages but it is not required. Although we did a Domino Magic Square activity at school, these pages can be quite tricky to explain. You may skip them.
Page 23 is simply writing in the missing numbers. If you are looking to challenge your child, tell them to circle the even numbers. We will eventually learn the pattern that all even numbers end with a 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
Page 24 involves some logic problems with listening to a story and drawing the correct amount of dots on each domino. If they need to, encourage your child to use their fingers to make a number like 6 in different ways: 4 + 2 or 5 + 1.
Pages 25 and 27 are similar but involve different sums of 10 and 9. Students will first need to count on to figure out how many more dots to make the sum. They then must write the equations of each fact family including addition and subtraction. Encourage your child to notice the pattern that each fact family will use the same 3 numbers.
Finally, pages 26 and 28 involve story problems where your child will need to show their work. Showing your work could mean just making dots to represent the story. It can also be as simple as writing the equation if they know it. A number tree is another way students have learned to show their work. At this point in first grade, students aren't expected to know facts like 15 + 3 off the top of their head so drawing out pictures or writing numbers is encouraged to show their work.
Challenge (optional): In class, we have practiced creating story problems with a question at the end. Encourage your student to come up with their own story problem and solve it. They could even challenge a sibling or you to solve it!
I have attached pictures of answers to this email if you need them. Some answers have flexibility and don't have to be exactly the same as the pictures below.
This should be brought back to school no later than Friday, November 7th. Please send any questions my way! Good luck and remember to have fun!
