Hello First Grade Families!
This week in PBL we continued our learning about the human body with the digestive system! Our body books are filling up and looking super cool. We can't wait to share them with you at our EoL on Friday, February 27th!
In math we are nearly finished working with number lines. Our Unit 4 assessment will be next week.
In writing we are working on writing complete sentences, and we will work up to writing an entire paragraph for our triimester writing project. As your student to tell you "what a sentence needs!"
Home Learning comes home again this week and will be due on or before Friday, February 6th. This is a great time to get into good homework habits. Starting in trimester 3 (Thursday, March 5) first graders who do not bring their homework in completed and on time will be joining "homework club." This means they will eat lunch and spend recess indoors with a classroom teacher to complete their missed work. This practice will carry through the rest of the grades at Etude, as this is the homework policy of all 2-3 and 4-5 teachers.

Hey there,
Home learning journals are coming home again! Pages 57 through 62 will need to be completed by Friday, February 6th. The time you have taken to aid your child has now added up to a lot of learning as we surpass 60 pages. It makes a big difference in their ability and confidence!
There are no new helpful terms this week.
Pages 57 and 58 involve the understanding of counting by 5's and 10's. In class, we use frogs to help us jump. Tad leaps by 10's and Polli jumps by 5's. Encourage them to count with you by 10's to help prompt them towards the answer. For some of the empty boxes, ask them to look at the numbers that are available and think what would make sense in the box. Are you counting by 1's? 5's? 10's?
We have seen pages similar to 59 and 60 in the past. This time instead of 5+3 it is 50+30. We have worked as a class to see the comparison and use it to help us add 10's. Struggling students will find the number line to be extremely helpful in solving these problems.
Pages 61 and 62 involve subtracting sharks. Why? I have no clue. We haven't talked about or used sharks in math at all. I guess the folks at Bridges Math think that 1st graders will be more motivated to do math for using them. Without a number line this may be tough. Struggling students should be encouraged to use their fingers or a number line if you can find or make one.
This should be brought back to school no later than Friday, February 6th.
Please send any questions my way!
