Hello First Grade Families!
This week we created our group space projects and individual stories! We had to do some really focused writing, creative problem solving and collaborating. We can't wait to show you all we've done. See you at the EoL on Monday at 9:00 in the gym!

Hey 1st grade families,
The red math journal is coming home tomorrow with pages 29 - 37 to complete! This week there is a game that can be played as much as you want! It is a pretty easy game they could teach to a family member. These pages are due Thursday, November 20th.
Helpful terms this week include:
doubles - adding the same number twice like 4+4=8
show work - using numbers, pictures, or words to express how to get an answer
count on - a faster form of counting which involves starting at the larger number (example for a domino with 6 and 3 more dots: 6, 7, 8, 9)
skip counting - counting by a number other than 1 ( 5, 10, 15, 20 or 2, 4, 6, 8)
Your child should be able to complete pages 29 - 30 independently. If they need to work out a problem, encourage the student to count on from the number, count backwards from the number if needed, to use their fingers, or even draw dots. The goal is to get the correct number, so there isn't a wrong way to get to the answer. By now, students should be able to add within 10 consistently since we have learned many strategies. If you see your child struggling, you will need to help them practice at home.
Page 31 involves counting by 5's. Rather than counting out 25 arms one by one, we can count by 5's and get the answer faster! Your child may need help understanding questions 2 and 3 which also involve counting by 5's. Word problems require some form of work to be shown.
Students should count by 10's on page 32 to get an answer faster than counting one by one. They will count by 10's until stopping and continuing to count by 1's.
I have included a paperclip for the game on pages 35 and 37. You will find directions on page 33 for this simple but fun game. Students have played this at school but with a die instead of a paperclip. They should already know the rules and can teach you or a family member you might be visiting over Thanksgiving break. Don't forget to double your number!!!
Challenge (optional): Page 37 involves an extra step to the game which is to spin twice and add the numbers before doubling the number.
I have attached pictures of answers to this email if you need them. This should be brought back to school no later than Thursday, November 20th. Please send any questions my way!
