Hello First Grade Families!
This week was a big one here in Room 118! First off, our field trip to the Art Preserve was fantastic! Your student can tell you all about it. Bathrooms on the third floor were a big hit! The Art Preserve is FREE, so if you're looking for something to do our class highly recommends it!
On top of that, we had Valentine's Day, PJ and stuffie day, AND our 100th day of school on Friday. What an epic end to an amazing week!
Whew! This teacher needs a weekend;)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
HOME LEARNING comes home today and will be due back on or before Friday, February 20th. Please do try to get into good homework habits! It will pay off in the long run. Starting next trimester, students who do not bring back their binders on time will be attending "Homework Club" with the 2/3's and 4/5's during Friday lunch and recess! Scroll down for directions, or see this week's email.
BODY BOOK SELF PORTRAITS are due back in the classroom next week on Tuesday. Our EoL is two weeks away and we are wrapping up our body books! Please email me if you need another roll of white paper. Your student should be traced, cut out, and drawn and colored in to create a self portrait, as themselves the way they look now (not as a character, etc.)
Yearbook orders are now open! Scroll down for the flyer. Prices are lower if you order before March 10th.
Extra clothing still needed! Please send a complete set of weather appropriate clothing for your student to keep in their locker.
Our classroom wishlist: Consider a purchase from our wishlist in honor of your first grader's birthday or a holiday. You can find it here.

Hello First Grade Families,
Pages 63 through 68 will need to be completed on or before Friday, 2/20. There are a few challenges this time around so more guidance might be needed when trying to solve them. I am amazed at the incredible insights being made in the classroom during number corner and math activities. Keep it up!
There are no new helpful terms this week.
Page 63 is about adding and subtracting to 7. If your child struggles, encourage them to use their fingers or count the cubes.
Page 64 could be tricky for your child. We have been looking at strategies when a question asks how many "more". One strategy is to draw circles or tallies to show each number then match them up by drawing lines connecting each one. However many are left over will be your answer. The other option is to make a subtraction equation to solve it such as 14-9=?
Challenge! The challenge question may be the hardest one yet. It will take some trial and error to figure out the answer so students shouldn't be discouraged if their first idea doesn't work out.
Use your fingers for page 65 if needed. All problems involve adding or subtracting 10.
You can use the same strategies as you did for page 64 when completing page 66. These are more challenging and may require more assistance to guide your child through the problems.
Page 67 involves both measuring and counting. You will notice that the measuring strip changes color with each group of 10 making it easy to count faster.
Use the 100 chart on page 68 to help you add and subtract 10. Circle the number you need and look down 1 if you are adding 10 or up 1 if you are subtracting 10.
This should be brought back to school no later than Friday, February 20th.
Please send any questions my way!
