Hello First Grade Families!
This week we wrapped up the respiratory system by adding lungs, diaphragm, trachea, nose and mouth to our body book pages! Next up: the digestive system. This one always raises some interesting questions;)
Home Learning comes home this week and will be due on or before Friday, January 30th. This is a great time to get into good homework habits. Starting in trimester 3 (Thursday, March 5) first graders who do not bring their homework in completed and on time will be joining "homework club." This means they will eat lunch and spend recess indoors with a classroom teacher to complete their missed work. This practice will carry through the rest of the grades at Etude, as this is the homework policy of all 2-3 and 4-5 teachers.
Scroll down for photos of a few of our wondrous builds and drawings done during free time this week, and of some of us out in the snow!

Hey 1st grade families,
Pages 51 through 56 will need to be completed this week. As always, your child may be able to do some of the pages independently but for the most part will need help with directions for the activities. The time you are taking to help your child is making a difference! Keep it up! This should be brought back to school no later than Friday, January 30th.
Helpful terms this week include:
doubles plus or minus one - using a doubles fact to help you solve another problem. Example: If you know 4+4=8, then 4+5 is just 1 more.
hopping on a number line - students will begin on the bigger number and hop the appropriate amount of times. Pay attention to + or - to hop forward or backward.
On pages 51 and 52, students will be making 8 in different ways. When adding, encourage your child to count on from the bigger number. Always look closely to see if you are adding or subtracting!
Pages 53 and 54 involve doubles facts and doubles plus or minus one. By knowing doubles facts from memory, this strategy gives students a way to add near doubles facts. The bottom of page 54 will definitely be a challenge for some students so it is not required. At school, we have been using the ones and tens place to help us add big numbers. When solving 25+25, we know that 5+5=10 so we can add that to get 20+20+10=50. Looking closely at place value will help your child solve these problems.
The class has been playing lots of games that work with number lines. Pages 55 and 56 are good practice for showing adding and solving on a number line. Students are encouraged to start at the bigger number and hop either forward or backwards depending on if they are adding or subtracting. This visual will help students gain a strong understanding of adding/ subtracting.
Please send any questions my way!
