FAFSA FAQ

What does "FAFSA" stand for?

FREE Application for Federal Student Aid

Should I submit a FAFSA if I know I'm not going to get any aid money back?

Many schools require information the FAFSA to be completed so they can send you your financial aid package and determine if you are eligible for scholarships. Even if you don't get any grant money, submitting a FAFSA may help you take out loans as well if needed. Submitting a FAFSA can't hurt you... it can only HELP you!

My parents are divorced. How do I know whose taxes to use?

If you parents are divorced, you only have to provide financial information for the parent with whom you live with more than 50% of the time. If you live with both parents equally, try to determine which parent pays for more of your expenses (clothing, school supplies, food, insurance, etc).

In cases of divorce, child support payments may need to be factored in as well. If this applies to your parents, try to figure out how much your parent is either paying, or receiving in child support.

Is there a separate application for the Pell Grant?

NO! If you receive emails that are asking you to apply for a Pell Grant, it is a scam! The FAFSA is the application for the Pell Grant and once submitted, there are no other requirements (unless additional information is required by the school).

If you get an email that seems odd, chat with one of your Counselors or Lexie before you do anything with it.

Does the FAFSA cost me any money?

NO! The first "F" in FAFSA stands for "FREE!" If you find a site that asks you to pay a fee to complete your FAFSA, close the tab quickly and come see Ms. Bekah for guidance abut the right site.

What is the benefit of completing a FASFA?

Completing a FAFSA opens the door to THOUSANDS of scholarship opportunities! FAFSA is a standardized and unbiased way for colleges to understand financial need. Submitting a FAFSA is the first step to receiving almost any type of financial aid. There are a few exceptions, but most scholarships and colleges use FAFSA as a preliminary eligibility criteria.

Can I still submit a FAFSA after the Priority Deadline of March 1?

Yes! FAFSA is open all year round. HOWEVER! By submitting your FAFSA before the March 1 Priority deadline, you are more likely to get the full amount of your expected aid. Schools have a finite amount of financial aid to distribute. Those who submit prior to March 1, are considered first and typically receive the most money. You may still get an award if you file after March 1, but it might not be as much as you expected.

Can I submit a FAFSA if I don't have a Social Security Number?

In most cases, no. Without a SSN, you can't qualify for federal financial aid, but you may be able to receive college and state tuition assistance and private scholarships. Come see Lexie for help!
