Three students from our school participated from the 15th of September to the 15th of October in an Erasmus mobility in “Fondazione Liceo Lingüístico de Courmayeur” in the Aosta valley (Italy), just below the Montblanc, in the Italian Alps.
Besides the lessons with the Italian students from the language program, they had the great opportunity to participate in the activities about climate change consequences in the Aosta Valley, with students from Lillehammer (Norway).
They visited the “Fondazione Montagna Sicura” in Villa Cameron, where the glaciers´ melting in the last decades was shown, and the problems of the Norwegian glaciers were also explained.
The natural disasters and changes in the lives of the locals from the Aosta Valley caused by climate change were also discussed.
In the photograph, above the houses, you can see the glacier at the top, and below the rocks that were covered with the glaciers’ ice, not many years ago. In those days the glacier nearly reached the road.
We don’t know how long the ice will last, for other people to enjoy this wonderful landscape if we don’t stop global warming.
We enjoyed the local architecture, on our way back to school.
We had the privilege to be able to walk on the glacier, with the Courmayeur mountain guides, who were with the activity organisation.
Always hiking safely on the glacier, attached to each other by a rope, getting used to the way you should walk in these places.
In the afternoon we got our backpacks and hiked to Walter Bonatti refuge, enjoying the sight of Montblanc, Grandes Jorasses and their glaciers hanging over the lovely valley.
After enjoying the night under the stars, and sleeping in the refuge, we descended another way to catch the bus back to Courmayeur, with the “Monte Bianco” always above us.
Having witnessed how glaciers have shrunk in a few years, we are well aware that the process is accelerating, and we have to do something before it gets too late.
Once in Courmayeur, back to normal life, attending our lessons in a wonderful environment and enjoying the company of our host families.
We're very grateful for the warm welcome we've had in the Aosta Valley, and the wonderful activities we've been invited to.
