We’re making an exciting change, staff email is moving to Gmail as part of our Google Workspace environment in July. This shift brings our tools into alignment across the Division, as students and classrooms already use Gmail daily.
What’s Changing?
New Email Platform: Staff email will now be handled through Gmail.
Same Tools You Already Use: You’ll access email using your existing Google account, just like you already do for Docs, Drive, and Calendar.
New Login & Email Address:
Your Google login and email address will change from:
staff.name@edu.sturgeon.ab.ca → staff.name@sturgeon.ab.ca
Email sent to your staff.name@edu.sturgeon.ab.ca address will continue to reach you, but your new address will become your primary going forward.
Why This Is a Good Thing
Gmail is already a familiar tool for most staff, we use it to support students every day. This change makes communication easier between staff and students and simplifies our technology environment across the Division.
What About Old Emails and Calendars?
While no new emails will go to your Outlook inbox, you’ll still be able to access your previous messages by visiting Outlook.com and signing in with your current Windows username and password.
Please note: Outlook calendar events will not transfer to your new Google Calendar. If you have important meetings or recurring events set up, you’ll need to re-create them manually in your Google Calendar.
Things to Watch For
Google Sign-Ins on Third-Party Sites
If you’ve used your current email address to sign in with Google then the login may stop working once your email changes. A sample of apps includes:
Canva
Trello
Educational websites
What to do:
Check your account settings on those services before the change.
If possible, link a backup email or switch to a regular username/password login.
Email Rules and Forwarding
Rules or forwarding you may have set up in Outlook won’t transfer to Gmail. If you rely on those, you’ll need to reconfigure them once your Gmail account is active.
