As part of our transition to Gmail and Google Workspace, we’ll be moving all quick, informal communication to Google Chat. This will replace Teams, Outlook chat, and other one-off messaging tools, though for now those tools will not be removed.
Why Google Chat?
Google Chat is built right into Gmail and integrates with Google Calendar, Drive, and Docs. It offers everything you need for quick updates, fast responses, and casual collaboration.
What You’ll Use It For:
One-on-one or group chats
Quick team updates or check-ins
Asking questions or confirming details without the need for an email
Beyond Chat: Use Google Spaces for Deeper Collaboration
Google Chat also includes Spaces, which are persistent rooms designed for longer conversations, file sharing, and project coordination. Each Space can include files, tasks, and message threads—perfect for department planning or ongoing initiatives.
Where to Access It:
From the Gmail sidebar (look for the Chat and Spaces tabs)
Or directly at: chat.google.com
Getting Started:
Just open Chat from the Gmail menu or visit the link above, then start a new message by typing in a colleague's name. Spaces can be created from the same area.
We're excited to bring this more unified, mobile-friendly approach to communication to the whole division.
