Parents are encouraged to review their child's schoolwork regularly and check for understanding.
Grade sheets and reports are sent home at regular intervals throughout the year – dates are published each year on the website.
These grades and reports are issued for the information of parents and students, rather than as an official school record for external use. An official grade transcript for external use may be obtained from the Guidance Department.
Students are given a numerical achievement grade.
The final report of the year will give the grades for the year and the end-of-year exam grade. The year grade incorporates an element of the exam grade.
Character reports are an important indicator of a student’s preparedness to learn. Character reports are not a comment on who the person is, but rather on how they act in school. They report on the student’s self-mastery, curiosity, tenacity and social intelligence.
Achievement grades (7-1) indicate performance on the scale described below. This follows the grading scheme of the International Baccalaureate.
It is important to note that where classes are taught by levels, the grading is relative to the level at which the subject is being studied. In Years 12 and 13, whilst the grades should not be seen as predictions for the IB Diploma, the achievement grade is increasingly linked to IB criteria as the course continues:
7 excellent
6 very good
5 good
4 satisfactory
3 mediocre
2 poor
1 very poor
Half grades are also used above 3 to permit greater discrimination.
Exceptionally, an N grade may be awarded when a student has missed lessons through absence authorized by the School and has not had a reasonable opportunity to make up work missed, or when a student has only just arrived in the school or a particular teaching group. The award of an N grade does not mean that the student does not need to make up the missing work, the grade for which can be carried forward and included in the next set of grades.
A separate system of achievement grading may be used for LIPS students in appropriate circumstances.
