In January 2025, studies showed that this month in 2025 was the coldest January since 1988! Also, fires that started January 7 spread quickly through places like Los Angeles county, fueled by very bad drought conditions and strong winds from Santa Ana. For space in January 2025, there were Quadrantid meteor shower peaks on January 3, Mars at opposition on January 16, Lunar Trailblazer & Nova-C IM-2 lunar mission, and finally Blue Ghost lunar mission with PlanetVac onboard.

In February of 2025 there was a severe flood in Queensland, Australia, a deadly gold mine collapse in Mali, and a crowd crush in New Delhi. The launch of NASA's PUNCH and SPHEREx missions to study the Sun and universe, and the launch of the IM-2 lunar lander were also held in February. Also, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars dominated the sky. There was also a kayaker who was briefly swallowed by a humpback whale off Chilean Patagonia and released unharmed! Lastly there was a new pope - Robert Francis Prevost.

In March of 2025, following her dominance at the Brit Awards early in the month, Charli XCX broke the world record for most streamed album by a British female in a single month. In other news, using AI restoration, an unreleased 1965 Beatles demo “Now and Then” was released and hit #1 on global charts.

Katy Perry became part of the six-woman crew to fly to space on Jeff Bezo’s Blue Origin Rocket, famously singing “What a Wonderful World” while floating in space. Continuing with entertainment, Beyonce kicked off her highly anticipated “Cowboy Carter” tour.

Key movies released in May 2025 include the action-packed Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Marvel's Thunderbolts, the horror sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines, and the live-action remake Lilo & Stitch. In July of 2025, France began to outlaw all outdoor smoking in locations visited by children frequently. Along with that, archaeologists found a 3,500 year old ancient city in Peru called Penico! In celebrity news in 2025, rapper LL Cool J decided not to put on a show in Philadelphia to support the strike of municipal court members. Liam and Noel Gallagher began the Oasis Live '25 reunion tour at Principality Stadium. This ended their 16 year split! But not everything that happened in 2025 was good. An overnight flash flood devastated Texas, killing 116 people. July 2025 was filled to the brim with interesting news.
August: Abby '32
August 2025 was jam packed with events! In Saudi Arabia, a rollercoaster snapped in half, injuring 23 people, leaving 3 in critical condition. On what would have been his 83rd birthday, the street to which Jerry Garcia was raised on, was named after him. Also in August, the head of the US Bureau of Statistics was fired after weak monthly job reports. In British Open Women's Golf, Miyū Yamashita of Japan claimed her first major title by 2 strokes from England's Charley Hull. In political news, almost 300,000 people marched across the Sydney Bridge in support of Palestine. This was the largest protest in Sydney's history.

In September of 2025, we had a Lunar Eclipse in some of the continents. Unfortunately, not in ours, but some students may still have been able to see it if they traveled! It was also the first full month at Lower Machungie Middle School for most of our sixth graders, an exciting start!

There were a lot of cool things in October! In October of 2025, Trick-or-treating happened on the same day as Halloween in some of our homes, which isn’t usually the case. Like always, we had school on this day, and the teachers all did special spooky themed activities for the occasion. The lights were turned off and glowsticks were passed out to students as they walked into the building.

During November of 2025, in U.S news, the last penny was minted. It was pressed on November 12, 2025 at the Philadelphia Mint. The penny cost nearly 4 cents to produce, which may seem small, but is expensive in the long run. It, and some of the other final pennies, were auctioned off in sets. The final set of pennies, called ‘Omega’ or #232 was auctioned off for a whopping $800,000 later in December. A week and half later, on November 23, the Hayli Gubbi volcano in northern Ethiopia erupted. NASA’s satellite data shows that the plume (the ash and gas that shoots out) reached 15 kilometers. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, so everyone in that area stayed safe.

Many exciting things happened during December of 2025! First off, thousands of dinosaur tracks were discovered in Italy. According to NPR, “The prints were found high in the mountains between the towns of Livigno and Bormio, where some of the Winter Olympics will take place in February.” On the entertainment side of things, Zootopia 2, Disney’s sequel to Zootopia, came out. It reached the billion dollar mark in box office just after 17 of release, making it the fastest PG rated movie to reach the $1 billion mark in box office!
All in all, 2025 was an exciting year in all different subjects, all around the world!
