It’s not black or white. AI is grey. In other words, AI is not necessarily good or bad. It is how a student decides to use it that makes it one or the other. There are many positives and negatives to AI.
Starting with ways that AI has improved education, AI assists in personalizing learning, providing guidance and tutoring, giving automated grading and feedback, and assisting teachers in planning lessons and creating projects. Programs, such as iReady and Lexia, use AI to determine which stages students are at in their learning and where they need to improve. This helps meet students’ personal needs and gives them extra support. Programs like these celebrate what students are doing well and acknowledge what they need to improve upon.
Although there are many positives to AI, there are also some negatives. Concerns regarding AI include privacy issues, bias, equity, and the ability for students to potentially bypass learning. When students use AI, the program gathers information, whether that’s on how good a student is at their multiplication tables or on how they need to work on their grammar. Although gathering data gives AI the ability to personalize learning and provide feedback, it does pose a concern on how this data is protected and used. Also, AI can obtain biases from their training data, due to the programmers’ biases, causing unfair outcomes, making it crucial that teachers select AI programs wisely. Although it depends on the user, students can have AI do work for them, and as technology advances, it has become easier and easier to do so. People should also not neglect the fact that AI can sometimes provide false or incorrect information, known as hallucinations.
There are many ways that students can utilize artificial intelligence in a good way. They can use it to help study for a test or use it to help brainstorm projects. People can use it to write emails, or have it explain something to that they don’t understand, or use it to organize thoughts, or so many other things. Whether you like it or not, AI is a part of our world and education. The decision to use it in a good or bad way is up to you.
