What do you do over winter break, LMMS? No matter what it is that you spend your December enjoying, you can probably agree that there are a lot of unique traditions that different families have. (If not, you’re in for a surprise.)
Holiday dinners very greatly for different families at our school. Harper Comstock, from team Incredible, eats shells, a shape of pasta, every Christmas at dinner. Miss H, an LMMS substitute, says, “For Christmas dinner every year, we eat prime rib.”
Also, and this brings us to another topic, Miss H says, ”Every year we hide a pickle ornament in our Christmas tree. On Christmas Day, people try to find it, and the person who finds it gets a prize.” Not only do different people celebrate with different meals, but they also have special games and family customs people do over the winter break. Selena Straughan, a team Xtream student, says, “At my house on New Year’s eve we hang up a piece of twine and place an ornament that looks like our dog, Bernard. Like the New York Ball Drop, we lower the ornament. At midnight, we lower it to the bottom.”
In my family, on the day that a lot of people consider Christmas Eve, we have a special holiday called Wiglia (a Polish word, pronounced Vah-leah-a). Our whole family goes to our grandparents house at dinner. We each take these bland wafers called oplatek and go around the table exchanging bits broken off from our wafers. Then, we dip them in honey. We next eat dinner, then play games.
What traditions do you have over winter break? I hope you enjoyed learning about other families traditions!
