Welcome to our weekly bulletin,
The sun has been shining on Durham Acadedemy this week and the parasols are out in the Quadrangle. There is anticipation in the air as we approach the start of Year 11 exams and students have been very focused in final revision sessions. Our new starter uniforms have been delivered to site in preparation for transition events, our Leading Parent Partnership Award group have been evaluating our home-school communication systems and as this bulletin is being written the sound of guitar music can be heard along the corridor as our peripatetic teacher teaches key stage 3 guitarists to perfom as a trio.
We have been very busy...
Students across different year groups have continued to visit the building site as part of our weekly community sessions and students have been amazed to learn about the features of our new building. Almost all students will visit the site at least once between now and our offical opening. Those students who find change more challenging will have frequent contact to familiarise themselves with the new environmenment.
Y10 students had a talk from Cambridge university all about what life would be like. They were told all about the subjects students could study, the societies that students can join and how they can apply for university. Students were told how student finance works and the different ways they would be financially supported at university. The students were very respectful and showed great ambition for their future prospects. Thank you Mr Jackson for organising this interesting talk.
Our Key Stage 3 students had an inspiring visit to the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. Students participated in a bespoke Doctors Masterclass, our aspiring medics dove into hands-on clinical labs, where they mastered the essentials of patient care—from monitoring blood pressure to performing life-saving CPR. They even put their diagnostic skills to the test using high-tech patient simulator called Franky. To round off the experience, students received an insight at university’s admissions procedure, giving them a clear roadmap for their future careers in medicine. It was a fantastic day of discovery that truly brought the world of healthcare to life!
The STEM GoKart is complete! There was much excitement in school today as the STEM GoKart was finally finished. Students have worked tirelessly to achieve this, completing modules in mechanics and engineering before physically assembling it ready for testing.
Well done to all students who have contributed to this each week and a huge thanks to Dr Atwal for organising it all!
After 6 lessons with the Brilliant club tutor, Leo and April have completed their assignments passing to University standard grades. With the Title of "How can we use spores to create self-healing concrete?" they learned about bacteria and what spores are and how they germinate. They finished off with a 2000 word essay, gaining marks of 57% and 60% which is a 2:2 and 2:1 at University grades. Both students are now invited to receive their certificates at Durham University's presentation awards on Tuesday night. We are VERY proud of them!

We believe all children should be equal and begin school fully equipped to learn in a professional way and as part of our commitment to ensuring every student begins their journey with confidence and a strong sense of belonging, we are pleased to provide all new Year 7 students starting in September with a free core uniform package which includes:
school blazer
skirt or trousers
tie
PE t-shirt
All new Year 7 parents and carers have already received an invitation with an allocated time slot to attend. In order to access this uniform, families should attend their allocated appointment where items will be fitted and issued; if you are unable to make your scheduled time, please contact the school to arrange an alternative.
Year 11 have been wearing their leavers hoodies with pride this week (despite the warm weather) and this marks an important change in their school career. They know that this adaption to unform must be worn with full school uniform either trousers or kilt but they are no longer required to wear their blazer.
We might be being optimistic but the sun has made an appearance this week and so we want to remind you that all students should bring a reusable water bottle to school which can be filled up from our water fountains. They should also wear sun-cream and bring this with them to reapply during outdoor PE lessons. All students can shade from the sun during breaktimes and it has been lovely to see them socialising under the parasols, but should they wish to sit out in the sun, we want them to stay safe from harmful rays.
