Welcome to our weekly bulletin,
As a valued member of our school community we will send you an update every Friday afternoon.
The excitement for rewards week and the Christmas break has certainly been felt in school this week.
We have seen even more STAR students, magic moments and faculty awards being issued and if that wasn't enough, we have also been...
We would like to invite you to a meeting on January the 21st to view the new build plans. The exact time will be confirmed in our first week back.
Wednesday was such a lovely day in school with hundreds of students eating together as a community and enjoying a free to all Christmas meal prepared and served by our staff. Students had the full restaurant experience of waiter service and the food was prepared between our catering staff and our Hospitality & Catering students from years 10 and 11. Students were joined by their class teachers in family dining and some students even offered to help with the tidy up. We can't thank the catering team enough for their hard work.
Student voice has told us that our Thursday fruit baskets are a big hit so we have decided to offer free fruit to all students during the big question Tutor Time too. Mrs Robins has become our resident green grocer and all Tutors groups have started the day with a burst of vitamin C!
Another group of Year 11 students have visited New college this week for taster sessions in their chosen destinations. Students told us this was a great opportunity to see what the college has to offer and gave them a real experience of what it would be like to study there.
Next week is going to be jam packed with experiences that provide students with life long memories. From ice-skating to laser tag and the pantomime, every student in school will take part in at least one reward. For those not travelling out of school there is a wide range of activities being offered by staff who are going the extra mile to celebrate the achievements of our students. You will have received a letter if your child is participating in anything that requires consent. Pleaser remember that it is parental responsibility to give accurate emergency contact details and a requirement that in the event of a medical or behaviour issue, you must be able to collect or provide another responsible adult to collect your child in an emergency. We know this can be a challenge if you are work so please check that your contact list includes someone who will be available to answer the phone.
Our final group of students travelled to University this week, experiencing university life, touring the campus and taking part in team building activities. It is so important that students experience post 16 destinations as early as possible to develop their ambitions and confidence.
Thank you again to Newcastle University and Dr Atwal.
Our coding club visited the Altitude foundation HQ today as part of the Altitude Foundation. After finishing their coding sequences they used 3D printers to craft their final pieces. They also had a tour of the site and found out a little more about careers in this industry. Another great opportunity to develop aspirations for the future and gain experience of the work place. Thank you Altitude!
This week in both assembly, and during the Big Question, we discussed Human Rights.
Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world's most ground-breaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
There has continued to be an increase in achievement points and a reduction in behaviour points overall this week with the exception of points for punctuality.
The start of the day is of vital importance and we request that you ensure that your child leaves home in good time to arrive no later that 8.25am. Tutor time starts promptly at 8.30am when important messages are given. Breakfast is available from 8.15am. If your child is late to school and it is not for a genuine reason, they will be given an after-school detention.
Students who attend more that 96% of the time are more successful that those who don't. This is a well known statistic.
The end of term in the old days might have been a compelation of Christmas films but that is not the case today. Our curriculum runs all the way through to the end of the term and with the exception of rewards activities and assemblies, your child should be in school and in lessons.
Please ensure that your child maintains their good attendance until the end of term which is Friday 20th at 3pm.
Those who have 100% attendance will receive additional rewards.
This week our celebration comes in a slightly different form as we are celebrating the significant achievements of one member of our school community. Alice in year 10 has an amazing talent in gymnastics and on the 30th of November, came 1st for the school at the Regional Schools Competition.
If this wasn't enough, last week, at the Northern Championships she came 1st (becoming Northern Champion) for individual trampoline. She also came 1st (Northern Champion) for the first time competing in DMT (double mini trampoline) . Her club also achieved best club in the North East for the 16th year in a row.
Well done Alice, you truly are a STAR student.
To help year 11 students with their revision we have a weekly recall topic. These topics are displayed in the Cafe and in Tutor time and tested by teachers across the school. This week the focus was on angles in a polygon.
You can help your child at home with little quizzes like this as regular recall is the way to secure long term memory.
