JOHN CONWAY

COACH, P.E. TEACHER & ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Mr. John Conway was a monumental figure in Duanesburg athletics for over 30 years. He served as a P.E. teacher, athletic director, head coach for golf, softball and wrestling, and was responsible for recruiting and hiring the legendary Joe Bena to the Duanesburg coaching staff. While he was the AD, Conway introduced both golf and bowling to the list of athletic offerings at Duanesburg.

Conway was head coach for one of the most dominant softball programs in the region. During his time at DCS, he accrued an 388-84 career record, earned two state runner-up titles, seven sectional titles, six sectional runner-up finishes and won all 6 WAC Cup competitions. In 2004 Conway coached one year of varsity baseball and won the WAC southern division title contributing to his run of 20 straight league league titles from the Schoharie county league to the formation of the WAC. Conway was inducted into the New York State High School Softball Hall Of Fame in June 2023.

Conway was the head coach of DCS’ wrestling team for ten years and in his final year as coach, the team captured the school’s first Section II Class D title. He stepped away as head coach to focus on officiating wrestling, but returned to the coaching staff 11 years later to assist Coach Bena and Sitors, ultimately finishing his career with one final stint as the head wrestling coach.

He was inducted into the Section II Wrestling Hall of Fame for his 30 year career as a wrestling official. He also officiated collegiate wrestling for 15 years.
