BARTON MacDOUGALL

CLASS OF 1960 | COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTER

Mr. Barton MacDougall is a 1960 alumnus of the Duanesburg Central School District. Even though he worked at neighboring Schoharie Central School District for more than 40 years as a French teacher and bus driver, he has spent his entire life giving back to the Duanesburg community.

Mr. MacDougall spent 33 years with the volunteer Duanesburg Fire Company and served as their president. He was the Commissioner for Duanesburg Fire District #2 for 10 years; volunteered for the Duanesburg Volunteer Ambulance Corps (DVAC) for 22 years and held leadership roles there including president and a member of the Board of Directors; was a member of the Duanesburg Village Cemetery Association for 64 years and previously served as president and treasurer.

Mr. MacDougall has been a member of Christ Church Duanesburg since the mid 1950s. During that time, he served as the church’s vestry for 30 years. He also served as a preacher for several local churches for nearly 40 years.

Because he has such a strong knowledge of local history, he is a frequent speaker at events held by the Duanesburg Historical Society. He regularly gives tours to groups of Duanesburg students to teach them about James Duane and his life.

In the summer of 2022, he was honored by the town for his many years of service by being made a Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day parade.

Mr. MacDougall has lived on his family’s property on Duanesburg Road his entire life. When he was younger, he spent 20 years delivering milk for the family business, Hugh MacDougall & Son. He married his wife Lisa (Remmers) in 1969 and together, they have one daughter, Heather.
