CHARLES GUYDER

TEACHER | COACH | PRINCIPAL | SUPERINTENDENT | 1958-1988

CHARLES E. GUYDER (1907-1974) was a 1948 graduate of Monroe High School. In 1952 he graduated from Springfield College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and in 1958 he received a master’s degree in administration from SUNY at Albany. Mr. Guyder completed additional studies in school administration at Ithaca College in 1961 and at the State University College at Oneonta from 1963 to 1965.  In 1952 he began teaching physical education in the Duanesburg School System, and until 1984 he was varsity coach of basketball, baseball and soccer. Mr. Guyder was also director of the summer recreation program for the towns of Delanson and Duanesburg and was a founding member of the Duanesburg Little League.  From 1964 to 1976, he served as principal of Duanesburg Elementary School. In 1976 Mr. Guyder 

assumed twin positions of elementary school principal and superintendent of schools. He became full-time superintendent of Duanesburg Schools in 1986 and retired in 1988.  From 1952 until 1964, Mr. Guyder served as village clerk of Delanson. A 41-year member of Delanson Fire Company he had served as treasurer and lieutenant, and from 1966 to 1977 he served on its board of directors.  In recognition of Mr. Guyder’s service and accomplishments, the Guyder Athletic Field at Duanesburg Elementary School was named in his honor.  During the Korean War, he served with the Army. He was a member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents; New York State Association of Elementary School Principals; New York State Teachers’ Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; and the Schoharie County Interscholastic Athletic Association.
