Almost all standards have a requirement to achieve Functional skills English and maths before the apprentice reaches Gateway.
The level can vary but most are level 2.
And in all cases, an apprentice must attempt a level 2 exam even if their standard has a level 1 requirement.
Most initial assessments for English and maths are carried out during the recruitment phase, however this is not always the case.
It is important that the assessor checks to make sure initial assessment for English and maths has taken place regardless of prior achievement.
