Boat Plan Activity- small groups
Show the following short video on creating a float plan
https://www.boaterexam.com/boating-resources/filing-a-float-plan/
Assign groups of 2-3 students and pass out "My Float Plan Bad Example"(Below). Give groups 5-7 minutes to discuss the float plan. Be sure to prompt their discussion by asking, "If this float plan was given to you by a friend before they left for an outing, would you feel prepared to help them if needed?"
Bad Float Plan Example: https://docs.google.com/document/d/0BxUKJZQ_u4uFSDBDV1piNnUtRXZJWTJiVU5fd09XRF9TWUNn/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=111599690427810800555&resourcekey=0-I3OzVQUQrGQ0KUlLjfaz4w&rtpof=true&sd=true
Have groups share their thoughts on what makes this plan effective or not. Most groups should see that it gives little useful information in the event of an emergency. Discuss what details should have been included in this example.
Finally, give all groups a blank copy of a boat plan(below). Give them 10-12 minutes to create a float plan of their own. After completion, ask 1 member of each group to share and have other groups give feedback.
