The DDHS Varsity Cheer team has had an extraordinary season so far, filled with some unforgettable achievements.
The team started off with a bang at their first competition of the season held at Clackamas High School. The squad won first place at the Clackamas Game Day Competition for their Medium Game Day routine.
Junior Varsity placed a strong second in their JV Game Day performance. Varsity also took home a fourth-place award in the medium 6A Division and JV took home second in the JV Large Game Day Division at the Oregon Cheer Coaches Association (OCCA) Game Day Championships.
During the Friday Night Lights season, in a game against Nelson, the cheer team wore their pink attire on the sidelines and dedicated their spirited performance to Kelsey Stiff, a beloved teacher who is bravely battling cancer. The sea of pink in the stands showed the community of students’ appreciation and love that they hold for the remarkable teacher as well as others battling breast cancer.
That same night, the Cheer team held their annual Junior Cheer Clinic where they invited students in grades Kindergarten to Sixth Grade to perform during halftime at the football game. The Junior Cheerleaders were taught a football chant, a sideline dance, and fun stunts for a full routine with the help of the varsity cheerleaders.
The Varsity team also had the chance to represent their school at the Mt. Hood Conference. Individual tumbler Junior Nevayah Samuels had the highest score of the day. The athletes that made both the first and second teams were Junior Nevayah Samuels, Senior Simone Greenfield, Senior Katie Dinh, Senior Mikaiah Hill, Junior Foiat Feleke, Junior Charlotte Van Meter, and their first and second stunt groups.
The cheerleaders also had a bittersweet moment celebrating their Senior team members at the last football game on October 20th. The seniors (Ella Guenther, Katie DInh, Mikaiah Hill, and Simone Greenfield) were all celebrated individually and shared their last home football game with a supportive crowd full of family and friends. These exceptional seniors have been an incredible source of school spirit throughout their time on the cheer team and at David Douglas. They have left a mark on their school that leaves all students proud to be a Scot.
