“I think it has been successful in serving its purpose and to give us the demographics of the student body involved,” said Ms Stiff, the activities director and overall overseer of The app at David Douglas High School.
It was October 24th, 7:15 pm at Palermini Stadium, David Douglas High School. An ambitious David Douglas Freshman scrolled away on his phone amidst the bone-chilling zephyr that would stop at nothing to ensure everything and everyone around it would suffer the wrath of its cold. A few moments later, a ‘ding’ was heard followed by a beam of joy radiated on the student’s face-his mission was accomplished.
He had successfully checked into the last Boys Soccer Varsity game through the five-star app. Furthermore, he now topped the leaderboard. His long-term mission was a success. But the question remained, what was the five star-app and how did it come about?
The five-star app is a home base school app that focuses on keeping the school community informed of the activities going on in David Douglas High School. A student, staff or community member basically opens the app, goes to check in and they then check in to the respective event they are attending. For every athletic event, the participant gets ten points for attending. These points can then be redeemed for prizes upon attaining a certain amount of points.
The five star app also hosts and regulates class competitions. Classes compete to see which grade level can garner the most points with the winner getting a surprise at the end of every semester. This helps keep school spirit and direct energy to positive causes. In the future, The Student Council seeks to make the Five-Star app the base for all student operations including but not limited to: a grade checking platform, a platform where you can check all school related information, vote for The Associate Student body and even eventually use it as a hall pass.
“I think it has been successful in serving its purpose and to give us the demographics of the student body involved,” said Ms Stiff, the activities director and overall overseer of The app at David Douglas High School.
“ The Five Star-App has really revolutionized school spirit and it has given people like me the motivation and drive to attend school events and be involved in the running of school activities,” said Jeremy, a David Douglas freshman who also happens to top the leaderboard in terms of spirit points.
Ms Stiff hopes the Five Star App will encourage more participation as the school year goes by.
