In regards to the brutal winter storm that struck Portland mid-January, a survey was released for students to share how they were affected by the weather, and how it impacted them academically.
The results showed that a majority of those who participated in the survey were disrupted by the storm in some way. Unsurprisingly, about 72% of participants reported to have lost power at some point, though for most it returned after a day. Furthermore, about 76% of participants experienced loss of internet during the storm.
The majority reported that they did not have to leave their homes due to the storm, but about 15% did have to leave for a day or two.
When asked how disruptive the storm’s effects were to their personal lives on a scale of one to five, one being not at all disruptive, and five being very disruptive, 66% reported that it was a three or higher. A large majority of participants said that its disruptiveness was a four out of five, and only 11% said it was very disruptive.
Surprisingly, results regarding how disruptive the storm was to students academically were scattered. Most students reported that the week off from school caused trouble for them, but the remaining 31% said the break’s disturbance was either a one or two out of five.
When asked to leave an extra comment concerning the storm, we found that many students complained that they were unable to study for finals week, and that the missing school days had a negative impact on their final grades.
