The boys Scots swimmers won the district meet, edging out the undefeated Nelson Hawks by 5 points, with a final score of 495-490, at the David Douglas Swim Center on February 9th-10th. Head Coach James Bowes was named district coach of the year after winning the district championship.
“Every coach of the year you get it’s because of the kids and assistant coaches,” said Bowes. “We have great swimmers and great assistant coaches are the reason why you’re awarded coach of the year.”
The MVPS to mention include sophomore Jonathan Nguyen and junior Kofi Franklin, as they were the key to David Douglas victory over Nelson, winning their consolation matches over Nelson swimmers for the victory.
Individual swimmers that qualified for state include district champion sophomore Nathan Ngyuen in the 100 Backstroke, sophomore Austin Pham 50 free and 100 free, and senior Bao Vuong in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke.
The relay teams that qualify for state are champions in the Boys 200 Medley Relay, senior Raymond Chung Nathan Nguyen, Bao Vuong, Austin Pham, Freshmans Elliott Huelshoff, Nathan Vuong, qualified both the 200 yard and 400 yard relay, (with Bao on the 200 team, and Austin, Nathan Ngyuen on the 400 team) while junior Daevin Ngyuen qualified through 200 yard freestyle.
Potential wildcards for state in their respective events are Nathan Nguyen: 200 IM 2nd place, Elliott Swanson: 200 Free 2nd place, Elliott Huelshoff: 100 Fly, 500 Free, both 2nd place respectively, and sophomore Raymond Le 100 Breaststroke 3rd place.
Honorable mentions are freshmans Allen Yu, Jake Lindberg, Ron Mei, David Chen, Ree Ler. Sophomores Troy Van Rys, Christopher Cong 10. Juniors Isaiah Clayton, Bryton Petrequin, Robert Vo, Kenneth Orellana-Morales, and seniors Zachary Young, Viktor Pospisil, Pablo Mencia, all contributed in earning points for the team for the hard fought victory.
