This class pushed me out of my comfort zone, but resulted in shaping me into a more confident speaker. Through writing and giving various different speeches, all at different lengths and on different topics, I learned what is important in speech writing. By the end of this class, I gained the ability to give a speech with a couple notecards and some bullet points.
Below are my speeches.
*In chronological order
Play Something, No Pressure
As our first speech writing and presenting assignment, were we instructed to write an intriguing speech about something that makes us who we are. I wrote about my "golden rule" and told a story from my favorite traveling adventure. I had a great time writing and presenting this speech!
For our second speech, we were assigned to find and analyze a famous speech or monologue. As a "This Is Us" fan, I chose to present a speech that was originally given by Kevin Pearson in Season 1. I felt a real connection to this specific speech and I thought that many people would be able to take something out of it. I absolutely loved giving this speech and had a great time learning more about the way speeches are given. I now have a better understanding of how presentation connects to the overall tone and feeling of the speech.
Informative Speech + Visual Aid
The History of Bicycles
As a "practice" for our final speech, we were assigned to create an outline for an informational speech on the topic of our choosing. Since I have an interest in cycling, I thought I would explore the origins of the bicycle. Turns out, it is much more interesting and impactful than it seems. As with every other speech, I was definitely outside my comfort zone. We were allowed 4 index cards for speaker notes while presenting, which meant that I had to become completely confident with what I was going to say before hand. Although this assignment presented me with a new challenge, I found it incredibly helpful in improving my confidence as a speaker.
Persuasive Essay + Visual Aid
Human To Human
It all came down to this... the final speech. I wanted it to be the culmination of everything that I learned not only in Freshman Seminar, but my entire freshman year. For this reason, I chose the topic of personal connection, as I realized it's importance throughout the pandemic and into the school year. Human connection is vital, a fact I probably wouldn't have come across without the situation that occurred. Since I had already given a practice speech, my nerves were less prominent during the presentation. Overall, I am very happy with how it turned out and a bit surprised with how much I improved my speech presentation skills. To be honest, I was terrified at the beginning of this class. Now, looking back, it gave me the opportunity to challenge myself in a way that I hadn't been challenged before. It significantly impacted who I was coming out of freshman year and moving forward.
Rhetorical Billboard
This project was a quick assignment given to us to apply our new knowledge on rhetoric. Not only was it fun to create, but it also allowed me to think like a marketing team and apply the skills I learned in Communications Technology by using photoshop.
Animal Adoption
For our third speech, we were assigned to a group of three other people to decide on a topic to present in the form of a speech and visual aid. We chose to speak on the topic of adopting animals from shelters. It was nice to be able to converse with other people while writing the speech as it is a sensitive topic. I wrote and gave the opening and closing parts of the speech. Through this assignment, I got to learn more about the history of shelters and why it is important to support them. Also, I became more comfortable with giving a speech!
For the visual aid, I created the first, second, and sixth slide. My group was Ariana Ortiz, Hannah Cohen, and Finn O'Brien.
